The NHL is emerging from an extended holiday break with taxi squads and other roster revisions, a move made to guard against more disruptions to the season amid more players and coaches going into COVID-19 protocol Sunday. Each team will be allowed to have a taxi squad of up to six players and to make emergency recalls from the minors if COVID-19 absences would cause anyone to play without a full lineup. Taxi squads, which were used during the shortened 2021 season, are set to be in effect until at least the All-Star break in early February.
For the first time in nearly two years, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team was back on its home floor to open Northern 2A play against West Wendover. The Longhorns gave the Wolverines a scare in the third quarter, but West Wendover pulled away in the final 12 minutes to beat Battle Mountain 80-45.
It took about a half to warm up, but the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team caught fire in the second half to beat West Wendover 51-22 in the Northern 2A opener for the Lady Longhorns. In addition, it was the first time Battle Mountain was on its home floor since February 2020, after missing out on last season to the Covid pandemic. “It was our first league game,” said BMHS Paul Tremayne. “We did not shoot particularly well in the first half. The defensive pressure finally broke them down in the second half.”
Nevada has hired Oregon co-defensive coordinator Ken Wilson as the Wolf Pack’s new head coach. Nevada athletic director Doug Knuth announced Friday that Wilson will take over the program after Jay Norvell accepted the head coaching job this week at Colorado State.
The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team traveled to Virginia City this past weekend for the Comstock Classic to close its preseason tournament slate of games.
It was another good weekend for the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team, who won three of four games at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City to improve to 6-3 on the season. “Overall, the Lady Longhorns played much better than last week,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “It is nice to see our scoring coming from multiple people.”
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team made the short trip to Winnemucca this past weekend for the Cody Louk Invitational. The Longhorns had a strong showing over the two days, finishing fifth with 136.50 points and was the highest finishing 2A school. Northern 5A perennial power Spanish Springs claimed the team championship with 262 points and Elko was second at 183.50. Lowry (174) and Damonte Ranch (140) were third and fourth, respectively.

The Lady Longhorns went 3-2 in the three-day event their first action since February 2020. “The Lady Longhorns had a good weekend,” said BMHS coach Paul Tremayne. “It was very exciting to be playing again after last year. We did a lot of good things as a team.”
The Battle Mountain High School started off their season with a trip to Reno for the younger wrestlers to compete in the Hug Tournament. “We were forced to cancel our varsity trip to Boise this year due to some injuries that we have been dealing with”, said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “However, our younger kids were geared up and ready to hit the mats after almost two years away from action”.
The Nevada football team has accepted an invitation to play in the 2021 Quick Lane Bowl where they will meet Western Michigan out of the Mid-American Conference.
When you think of sports for youths to do, the first that comes to mind are football, basketball, soccer and baseball and softball. However, roller hockey is starting to gain more and more momentum in Winnemucca for youngsters to try out. A little over two years ago, Colby Corbitt started the Winnemucca Mustangs roller hockey team. At that time there were about a dozen or so players, but now that group has soared to about 40 players in just a short amount of time.

The Battle Mountain High School football team was rewarded well for its run to the semifinals of the NIAA State Championships, with a number of postseason awards. The Longhorns finished the year 7-3 and 6-2 in league play. Brice Domagala was named the Northern 2A Player of the Year, as he led the Longhorns from the quarterback position. Domagala threw for over 1,000 yards with nine touchdowns.
After seeing the 2020-21 high school basketball and wrestling season canceled because of the Covid pandemic, the athletes and coaches are back on the mat and floor and fans are eager to watch.
Nevada freshman Tierney Wolfgram completed her season at the 6K at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Wolfgram finished in 20:35.6, 117th out 255 athletes and the highest placement at nationals in Wolf Pack history. Wolfgram finished second at the Mountain Regional in Provo with her time of 20:20.4, becoming just the second Pack athlete in history to qualify for nationals.
