Longtime Giants ace Madison Bumgarner has reached agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks on an $85 million, five-year contract that ends his run of success in San Francisco, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the 2014 World Series MVP still needed to pass a physical to complete the contract. Bumgarner pitched 11 seasons for the Giants but knew his time likely had ended. He bid farewell along with retiring manager Bruce Bochy on the final day of the season.

The Winnemucca Junior High School volleyball teams will be holding open gyms starting next month.
It appears the Lowry High School boys basketball team can win games in different ways. Just three nights earlier, the Buckaroos knocked down 16 3-point field goals in a 100-49 win over Fernley. In Saturday’s 69-31 victory over Sparks, the Buckaroos failed to make a 3-pointer, but made 31 field goals to improve to 2-0 in the Northern 3A and 3-2 overall.
With just three returning players and nine new girls on the roster, the Lowry High School girls basketball team is still trying to land on its feet in the early part of the season. The Lady Bucks began the year with three games against 4A schools and a league opener in Fernley, which figures to be one of the best teams in the Northern 3A. Lowry went 1-3 in that stretch, beating Galena.
About the only excitement left on a late Tuesday night is if the Lowry High School boys basketball team was going to score 100 points. To get there, the Buckaroos needed to score 23 points in the final eight minutes of play. Making it even tougher, all eight of those minutes were on a running clock when Lowry pushed the lead to 35 points with 1:33 left in the third quarter. Mason Ellingford ended the suspense with a put back in the final minute to give Lowry a 100-49 win over Fernley. “Everything started with Chance (Huitt) and Anthony (Hemp) on defense,” said LHS coach Chad Peters. “Chance got in early foul trouble with two fouls and we asked him to guard their best guy. He did a good job of staying out of foul trouble and held his man down. Chance was the only guy that did not score tonight but was just as important in the win than anybody else all night long. Anthony came off the bench and picked up the slack. He got hot, hit some shots and played great defense.”
After being named a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree last month, Nevada senior linebacker Lucas Weber has been selected to the 2019 Academic All-America Division I Football First Team. Weber is Nevada’s first Academic All-America selection since Brooks Klein of the Wolf Pack baseball team earned a second team selection in 2013. He is the Pack’s first first team honoree since Andrew Hickey of the rifle team in 2009. Weber is the fifth Nevada football student-athlete to earn the distinction, and first since Erick Streelman in 2002.
The Lowry High School wrestling team hit the road last weekend for one of its longest road trips of the season to compete at the Green Valley Duals in Las Vegas. The Buckaroos got a look at teams and wrestlers they don;’t see during the year and picked up two wins in five duals. “I knew what it would be when I signed up for it,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “I knew there would be some good teams. It would have been nice to get a couple more duals in, making that long of a trip. It was a good chance for our guys to see some different teams and wrestlers instead of going up against guys we will see each week.” Lowry picked up a 42-36 win over Basic from Las Vegas on the strength of a pin by Kole Mattson over David Trukeen in the first period of their 285-pound match.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team began its season last weekend with thee games against Northern 4A and 3A JV teams at the Winter Invitational in Reno. McDermitt opened with a 53-44 loss to the Carson JV on Thursday, Dec. 5. After leading by three points after the first quarter, the Senators outscored the Bulldogs 14-6 to lead 27-16 at halftime. McDermitt bounced back in a big way on the third quarter with a 20-12 run to cut the deficit to three points. However, Carson pulled away late in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.
Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time this year, the Lowry High School girls basketball team got off to a slow start Tuesday night against Fernley and never recovered. The Vaqueros scored the first eight points of the night en route to a 64-39 victory. The Lady Bucks dropped to 0-1 in the Northern 3A and 1-3 overall. Lowry’s only bucket of the opening eight minutes of play came at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter on a put back by McKenzi Petersen. The Vaqueros scored the final six points of the opening quarter to lead 14-2.
The Lowry High School girls basketball team started off its season at the Winter Tip-off Invitational at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks last weekend. The Lady Bucks won one out of its three games, beating Galena 52-33 on Thursday night. Lowry found itself tied with Galena 10-10 after eight minutes of play, but shook off the nerves and pulled away in the final three quarters. “This was a very typical first game of the season for us.,” said LHS coach Melanie Thurmond. “I could tell that we were nervous, had trouble catching the ball and making silly mistakes.” Lowry grabbed a 22-16 advantage at halftime and never looked back, outscoring Galena 30-17 in the second half. “After halftime, we became more comfortable and were able to start pressing and pulling away,” added the coach. “We had several players that played well for us.”
Three Winnemucca girls took part in the 2019 Nevada State Swimming Championship in Henderson on Nov. 8-11. The Winnemucca team merged with a larger team in Reno to provide more support to the community a little over a year ago. The squad that went to Henderson included Claudia van der Veen, Paris Collins and Colette van der Veen.
With her second-place finish at the NIAA 3A State Cross Country Championships in Reno in November, Lowry's Jovi Kuskie was named to the all-state first team. She was also a all-league, first-team selection.
The Nevada football team today accepted an invitation from the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and will take on Ohio in the Jan. 3 game on at Albertson’s Stadium in Boise, Idaho. This is Nevada’s second-straight bowl berth and the Wolf Pack is currently on a two-game winning streak in bowl games. Nevada toppled Arkansas State 16-13 in overtime last year at the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl, and the Pack beat Colorado State 28-23 in the first Arizona Bowl in 2015. “We are excited for this great opportunity to play in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl," said Nevada's third-year head coach Jay Norvell. "Ohio had a great season and is a really good football team. We are looking forward to the challenge of playing them. I'm thrilled for our seniors to have a chance to play in one more game in their careers."
After more than three weeks of practice without a game, the Lowry High School boys basketball team hit the floor for the first time this season last weekend at the Elko Invitational. The Buckaroos played three games in two days and came away with one victory in the three contests. Lowry opened up with Hunter (West Valley City, Utah) on Friday and suffered a 70-53 loss. Lowry took on Reno Saturday morning and was defeated 69-37 and finished the tournament with a 66-54 win over Hug.
