The Winnemucca Junior High School girls basketball team will be holding open gyms for the upcoming season.

Battle Mountain swim team competes at 2023 NNA Silver State Championships in Reno

Battle Mountain swimmers were back in the pool in Reno from July 15-17 at the 2022 NNA Silver State Championships and Idlewild Pool. The swimmers had to contend with hot conditions, as preliminary races started at 8 a.m. with the finals at 4 p.m.

Katie Cassinelli shot a round of 86 to win the Doug Maddox Memorial Junior golf tournament held Wednesday, July 19, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

Youngsters hit the mat for Lander County wrestling camp

The Lander County Recreation Center sponsored a youth wrestling camp last week. The camp instructor was Richard Cox, former four-year starter for Division I Gardner-Webb University. Cox is also a Battle Mountain graduate. The younger group spent more time learning the fundamentals, while the older group did more advanced drills.

Batter up — The ultimate home run derby showdown approaches

Get ready for the Lovelock Softball Association's "Bombs Away for Summer" home run derby and family night. It will be on Friday, Aug. 4, at McDougal Park. "The derby will be under the lights around 8:30 or 9 p.m., whenever it gets dark," says Philip Schmith, the LSA president. Admission is free and the concession stand will sell cold drinks, burgers and nachoes smothered in cheese.

The Winnemucca junior golf season kicked off on Wednesday, July 12, with the Emelie Dillon scramble, as members of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club joined the youngsters.

Against the wind: Lovelock Speedway roars back for another summer of "good ole dirt track racing at its finest"

When Brett Wilkins' in-laws asked him if he'd reopen the Lovelock Speedway, he said he'd think it over. For one thing, he lives in Fallon. Also, the track had been closed for two years. "Everything from plumbing to equipment was in bad shape from sitting, not to mention the track surface itself," he said.

Spike Frog Volleyball Camp improves players skills

Area junior high school and high school volleyball players had the opportunity to improve their skills with the Spike Frog Volleyball camp at Lowry High School this past Friday and Saturday. The camp was instructed by Josh Taylor from Utah, who has been with Spike Frog since 2009. The campers learned the various skills to improve their game as the new season approaches.

Nevada Little League State Tournaments starts Thursday in Winnemucca

The 2023 Nevada Little League State Tournament starts Thursday in Winnemucca and runs through Sunday at the Little League Major Boys Field on Haskell Street. In the 8-10-year-old division, Washoe takes on Peccole at 8 a.m. and White Pine plays Paso Verde at 10:30 a.m.

National High School Finals Rodeo starts Sunday in Wyoming

The National High School Finals Rodeo begins Sunday in Gilette, Wyo., and concludes on June 22. A handful of Humboldt County and Battle Mountain cowboys and cowgirls will be competing.
