The Joshua L. Foundation has selected 15 new scholarship recipients from 13 different high schools in northern Nevada and each recipient will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The 2024 recipients include local student/athletes Maddison McClure (Lowry High School) and Madyson Grenz from Pershing County High School in Lovelock.

PCHS sets an hour aside at the end of each sports season to recognize the athlete’s hard work. On Wednesday, they celebrated the spring sports - baseball, softball, and track and field.
The newest class of the McDermitt High School Hall of Fame was inducted this past Saturday, at the McDermitt Community Hall.
There were close contests at the 2024 State Track and Field Championships last weekend at Carson High School. More than 1,000 athletes from four different classifications competed in the two-day event. They’d all qualified to compete at the state level.
In his final meet of his high school career, Battle Mountain High School’s Blake Stuart won the 2A triple jump at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Carson High School in Carson City. Stuart came into the finals second in the seeding, but saved his best for last with a personal-best leap of 41 feet, 8.75 inches.
You could say Lowry High School sophomore Brent Kenison had a pretty good weekend at the Nevada State Track and Field Championships at Carson High School in Carson City. The state capitol was taken over by Kenison, who won three individual state titles over the two days. He did in style, setting personal bests in all three events.
The Lowry High School boys golf team concluded its regular season last week with tournaments in Dayton and Reno. The Buckaroos and the Northern 3A saw its tournament move from South Lake Tahoe to the Arnold Palmer-designed Dayton Valley Country Club on Monday, May 6.
The Pershing County High School track and field team got off the ground this season in more ways than one. At the Northern 2A Regional Championships in Carson City this past weekend, over a dozen Pershing County athletes progressed to the state level.
The softball team Lovelock loves to watch won the Northern 2A Regional Championship last weekend on its home field. In the opening round, Pershing County overcame a deficit against Battle Mountain with a home run from Taylor Garland in the fifth inning. The final score was 5-2. Later on Friday afternoon, the Mustangs edged out Yerington by one slim run, 14-13.
The Humboldt County Rodeo Club hosted its annual high school and junior high school rodeo. Cowboys and cowgirls from around the state converged on Winnemucca. Those same cowboys and girls will be back in Winnemucca at the end of May for the state finals.
On Saturday, the Pershing County High School baseball closed out its season at home with back-to-back wins against Silver Stage. The Mustangs traveled to Silver Springs earlier in the week and lost 13-7 to the Nighthawks.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team rounded out its season this past Friday in Tahoe City, Calif., with a doubleheader against North Tahoe. The Lakers won the opener 5-2, with the Longhorns bouncing back to win the season finale 7-6. Battle Mountain concluded the year at 6-19 overall and 5-18 in the Northern 2A.
Last week the Pershing County High School softball team defeated Silver Stage on the road in five innings (36-19). This past Saturday, the Mustangs hosted and beat the Nighthawks in both senior day games (15-0, 19-4). With the series sweep, Pershing County sits at the top of the Northern 2A League at 23-0 overall and 21-0 in league play.
