In an already busy month in Humboldt County and Winnemucca, one more event is on the docket for shooting enthusiasts. The United States Practical Shooting Association will be hosting its Area 1 Championship from May 16-19 at the range located off of Rose Creek. About 550 shooters and their families will converge on Winnemucca for the match. USPSA Area 1 includes Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. There are 51 clubs within 12 sections.
It was a few days later than expected but the Lowry High School softball team finished off a three-game sweep of Dayton, with a 13-1 win on Wednesday, May 1. The game was scheduled to be played Friday, April 26, in Winnemucca, only to be postponed by rain and moved to Dayton.
Feather River bound
After a long and sometimes a complicated process, Lowry High School senior Savannah Stoker has found her landing spot for college basketball. She will be headed to Twin Falls, Idaho, and College of Southern Idaho.
Battle Mountain senior Blake Stuart wrapped the regular season by winning the long jump at the Don and Lynda Walton Invitational this past Saturday at Lowry High School in Winnemucca. He had a leap of 19 feet, 9 inches. In addition, Stuart placed third in the triple jump at 38-9 and the high jump (5-10).
The Pershing County track team continues to shave seconds off their running times, while adding height to their leaps and distance to their throws. They earn about 20 personal records (PRs) at each meet they attend. Last Saturday’s Don and Lynda Walton Invitational at Lowry High School in Winnemucca was no exception.
The Pershing County baseball team played three tight games against Sierra Lutheran last week. They won or lost each of them by one-point margins. On Tuesday Pershing County beat the visiting Falcons (9-8). Pershing County finished the series in Carson City with a win (5-4) and a loss (3-2).
The Northern 3A boys golf season is in full force now and returned to the course in Spring Creek and Elko last week. The league stopped at Spring Creek Golf Course on Monday, April 22, with the Buckaroos finishing eighth as a team with a score of 375
The rain finally went away for the Ladies Golf Club Monday (April 15) and Tuesday (April 16) tournaments. The Monday Nine Hole tournament first low gross winner was Shelly Smith with a score of 52.
To say it was a wild ride for the Lowry High School baseball team this spring would be an understatement. The Buckaroos were down to 11 players for the final three weeks of the season and picked up their first league win of the season in the finale homes games of the year.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team suffered three losses on the road to Yerington this past weekend. The Lions won the opener 15-2 on Friday and swept the doubleheader on Saturday 5-0 and 8-3.
The Battle Mountain High School softball team inched closer to a spot in the Northern 2A Regional Championship, May 10-11, in Lovelock. Battle Mountain knocked off Yerington 16-5 on Friday afternoon in Yerington, with the Lions bouncing back to sweep Saturday’s doubleheader 11-9 and 6-5. The Lady Longhorns stand at 9-9 in league play.
The Lowry High School swim team returned to Northwest Pool on Saturday, Apil 20, to dual South Tahoe. The Vikings collected two wins, beating the boys 128-19 and the Lady Bucks 141-90.
A slow start to the season put the Lowry High School softball team behind the 8-ball in chase to get back to the postseason after playing in the 2023 3A state championship game. In the past couple weeks, the Lady Bucks have hit their stride and will no be in the postseason after sweeping Dayton 18-2 and 15-0 on Thursday afternoon.
It was a special day for two Lowry High School track and field athletes, as they set new school records during the Don and Lynda Walton Invitational on Saturday. Sophomore Brent Kenison won three individual events on the day, including setting a new school record in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet, 6 inches. He also led the way in the triple jump with a mark of 43-8 and the high jump (6-0). Kenison was seventh in the discus.
