Mormon cricket outbreaks — ‘unique and amazing’ or a giant nuisance?

The Western battle with Mormon crickets dates back to the earliest days of European settlement. During outbreaks, which occur seasonally during a several-year period, the flightless insects can cause everything from headaches for homeowners and drivers to substantial economic loss for ranchers and farmers. This year, sludge from crushed crickets caused slick roadways in Eureka County, leading to multiple accidents. At Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko, staff used leaf blowers, brooms and, at one point, even a tractor with a snowplow on it to push piles of crickets out of the way.

Efforts to build more electric vehicle charging stations in Nevada sputtering

At the 2016 dedication of the first state-sponsored electric vehicle charging station in Beatty, former Gov. Brian Sandoval demonstrated how easy it was to charge an electric Ford Focus. “This is the first electric highway in the United States,” the Republican then-governor said during the ceremony at the new charging station outside of Eddie World on U.S. Highway 95. “It’s significant steps like this that show the rest of the country that we are tech savvy, especially when it comes to electric cars and autonomous vehicles.”

Nevadans have cast first votes of the 2024 general election

Early voting isn’t scheduled to begin for another 25 days, but the first votes in Nevada’s 2024 election cycle have started to roll in through the state’s digital absentee voting system. As of Monday, in a historic first, two ballots have been cast via the digital application by Native American voters living on a reservation or colony.

Battle Mountain blanks West Wendover for first win

It was a happy homecoming for the Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team, who picked up its first win of the season with a 5-0 rout of West Wendover on Friday in Battle Mountain for homecoming.

Mustang volleyball team nets homecoming week wins

Last week, the Pershing County High School volleyball beat West Wendover 26-24, 25-16, 25-16 and Oasis Academy 25-14, 25-14, 25-21 at home. On Saturday, the Mustangs swept Silver Stage 29-27, 25-17, 25-10 on the road. Pershing County has played every team in the conference without losing a game.

Late rally falls short as Incline beats Battle Mountain

The last time the Incline High School football team traveled to Battle Mountain, it was for the opening round of the NIAA 2A State Championships. The Highlanders pulled off a shocking win on that night, scoring on a long touchdown pass in the final seconds to beat the Longhorns 21-16. The two squads saw each other once again this past Friday, as part of Battle Mountain’s homecoming.

A loss, a tie, a win and a homecoming queen

The Pershing County High School girls soccer team had an eventful homecoming week. They lost 12-0 to Lowry, tied with White Pine 0-0 and beat West Wendover 9-0. As if that wasn't enough, their captain was crowned homecoming queen at the Friday night football game.

Just a few days after suffering its worst loss of the season, the Lowry High School girls soccer team took out its frustrations against Pershing County on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Lovelock. The Lady Bucks blanked the Mustangs 11-0, in a match shortened by the NIAA mercy rule.

Cassinelli finishes second in Fallon

It was scheduled to be another doubleheader week for the Lowry High School girls golf team. The Buckaroos traveled to Dayton and the Arnold Palmer designed Dayton Valley Country Club on Monday, Sept. 23.

Thomas wins at Truckee Cross Country Invitational

The Lowry High School cross country team made a trip to the Sierra Nevada Mountains this past Saturday for the Truckee Cross Country Invitational. The Buckaroos ran in the junior varsity portion of the 3.1-mile race, with sophomore Alyla Thomas winning the girls JV race in a time of 21 minutes, 46 seconds.

Lady Bulldogs sweep Braves

The McDermitt High School volleyball team collected its fifth win in six matches and stand in an excellent spot for the postseason in November. McDermitt hosted Owyhee on Saturday afternoon and cruised to a three-set sweep to improve to 5-2 in the 1A East.

Battle Mountains drops two Northern 2A matches

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team started the second half of the Northern 2A schedule on its home floor last weekend, as the school celebrated homecoming. It was not the start Battle Mountain was looking for, as Incline won in four sets on Friday night 25-12, 25-17, 19-25 and 25-23.
