A rare tiny butterfly found only in a remote stretch of Northern Nevada will soon gain federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Tuesday that the bleached sandhill skipper, a small golden-orange butterfly that typically measures under 2 inches long, warrants federal protections as an endangered or threatened species.

After having its original league opener postponed on Friday, the Lowry High School boys basketball team opened Northern 3A East play on Saturday afternoon in Elko. The Indians pulled away in the second half for a 60-39 win. The Buckaroos took an early 15-13 lead after eight minutes of play, with all the points coming off 3-pointers.
After having 11 days off over Christmas break, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team jumped back into the fire with three games in consecutive days last week. The Lady Longhorns improved to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in league play after picking up a 38-37 overtime win on the road at West Wendover on Thursday, a 63-18 victory over Silver Stage and a 36-12 win over Sierra Lutheran at home on Saturday.
Longtime Battle Mountain and Tonopah wrestling coach Mitch Domagala was one of six coaches inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Nevada chapter. The ceremony took place at the Silver Legacy. The induction was held in part with the Reno Tournament of Champions.
It had been 13 years since a Lowry High School wrestler won an individual championship at the Rollie Lane Invitational. In 2012, the Buckaroos saw Ryan Nelson, Jace Billingsley and Michael Billingsley win, as did Lowry as a team.

ELKO — On Dec. 28, 2024 at approximately 11:45 a.m., Devon Barton, 30 years of age from Battle Mountain, was riding a “Timbersled” with his family. Barton was riding near the Dollar Lakes in Lamoille Canyon and was trapped under the snow when he was caught in an avalanche.
