Pershing County athletes win league, state and special awards

On Tuesday, Nov. 28, a sizable portion of Lovelock gathered in the high school auditorium. They came to see the fall sports athletes receive recognition from their coaches and league.

Nevada’s Johnson named to All-Mountain West First Team

Emany Johnson's career season for Nevada in 2023 earned him selection to the All-Mountain West First Team at defensive back, the conference announced Tuesday. Johnson headlines six Wolf Pack selections, as the quintet of wide receiver Dalevon Campbell, linebacker Tongiaki Mateialona, kicker Brandon Talton, linebacker Drue Watts, and offensive lineman Isaiah World.

Lowry boys go 1-2 at Elko Tournament

The Lowry High School boys basketball team tipped off its season this past weekend in Elko for a three-day tournament. Lowry opened the season on Thursday with 77-40 loss to Kuna, Idaho. The Buckaroos collected their first win of the season on Saturday with a 79-75 win over West Wendover.

The Pershing County High School boys basketball started preseason with mixed results. They lost to Smith Valley (70-40), Mineral County (71-69) and Sparks (48-47) but defeated Beatty (49-31).

Lady Longhorns open with five wins at Serpent Classic in Hawthorne

The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team began its season on a high note with five wins at the Serpent Classic this past weekend in Hawthorne. The Lady Longhorns opened the year with a 39-26 win over Smith Valley and a 61-21 victory over host Mineral County.

McDermitt boys drop three games at Winter Invitational

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team saw its season start this past Friday and Saturday the Winter Invitational in Reno. The tournament features JV schools from the 4A and 3A and some 1A and 2A varsity schools as well.

Longhorn wrestlers travel to Idaho for Donnelley Duals

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team hit the road for Idaho last weekend for the Donnelley Duals at Capital High School in Boise. The reigning 2A state champions saw some of its toughest competition all year. The Longhorns took part in five duals, dropping them all to the Idaho schools.

PCHS wrestling team is ready to compete

The PCHS wrestling team has long been a force to be reckoned with. However, this season they add numbers to their arsenal. Eighteen wrestlers have signed up for the physically and mentally demanding sport.

Lowry wrestlers go 4-1 at Fallon Duals

The Lowry High School wrestling team made the short trip to Fallon on Saturday t starts its season with the Fallon Duals. The Buckaroos varsity squad went 4-1 and the JV group going 0-4. Luke Fentress, a senior at 190 pounds and Jhet Harber, a junior at 175 pounds, each went a perfect 5-0 on the day.

It was a busy three days for the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team to open the season this past weekend at the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne. The Longhorns, who feature four freshman, one sophomore, two juniors and four seniors picked up three wins in five games.

Professor awarded $1.48M grant to develop interactive CPR training films for high schoolers

RENO — To make CPR training among high school students and athletes more effective and save more lives, Dr. Lorrel Toft, a cardiologist and associate professor at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, is developing interactive films and other digital media with funding from the National Institutes of Health in collaboration with Coram Technologies.
