Commission inquires about shooting range addition

The Humboldt County Board of Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Jan. 17 and with all members present:  The Board discussed a request by the local Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office to convey a parcel of land adjacent to the Humboldt County Shooting Range to the County in order to expand and build a 1,000 yard range.  An Environmental Assessment was completed by the local Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office in order to convey the parcel and was submitted to the Department of Interior in Washington, DC in the middle of 2022. 

Community rallies to raise money for 5-year-old girl battling cancer

Era is a 5-year-old girl who has been battling leukemia since August  2022. Through the love and support of Winnemucca’s tight-knit community, thousands of dollars have been raised in order to help Era’s family pay for medical expenses associated with her treatment.  

Tomo the tiger retires to Safe Haven Wildlife Sanctuary

After departing the film industry in California, Tomo the tiger recently retired to the Safe Haven Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Imlay, NV, in Dec. of 2022. He has since been seen soaking up the amenities at the sanctuary and enjoying feeding time.

Legislators seek local input during Winnemucca visit

Three Nevada legislators are scheduled to participate on information gathering meetings in Winnemucca next Tuesday, January 24, 2023. State Senator Ira Hansen (R-Sparks) along with Assemblymembers Shondra Summers-Armstrong (D-Las Vegas) and Alexis Hansen (R-Sparks) plan to meet with local officials and the public to hear about issues of concern that may be considered in the upcoming session of the Nevada Legislature the begins in February.

Water year off to great start, current snow amounts better than peaks measured last year

 Across the region, 2023 already ranks as one of the strongest starts to winter accumulation on record. Snowpacks across Nevada and the Eastern Sierra are 136-258% of median and the near non-stop barrage of storms since Christmas is causing percentages to increase daily with current weather forecasts calling for additional storms through the third week of January.

50,000 Nevadans will see reduction in food assistance

Since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants have received a second monthly payment, known as Supplemental Emergency Allotments (SEA). After March 14, 2023, those second monthly payments will end. Beginning in April, the first monthly payment will be the only benefit.

Montana woman saved by stranger after motor vehicle accident near Battle Mountain

It was just another cold winter morning until Valerie Guerrero’s car hit a patch of black ice on Interstate 80 while she was traveling eastbound between Winnemucca and Battle Mountain on her way home to Montana on Dec. 15.  The accident report from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) confirms that Guerrero’s vehicle rolled after sliding on black ice, hitting the median and a paddle marker. She sustained eight broken ribs, a broken lower back, four different breaks in her leg, a major blow to her head, and many other minor injuries. 

New technology will change the way tobacco retailers verify age

Effective Jan. 1, tobacco retailers are now required to use enhanced verification, like ID scanning, to help keep tobacco products out of the hands of youth. 

City council approves consideration of proposal to diversify economy with transloading terminal

Transloading helps transfer cargo from one method of transportation to another and allows large quantities of materials to be transported for the majority of the shipment’s journey by more cost-effective and environmentally responsible means. 

Officials get sworn in for New Year—

Newly elected officials and senior officials were sworn in to their positions for 2023 by Sixth Judicial District Court Judge Michael Montero at the Humboldt County Courthouse on Jan. 3 with friends and family present.

Fatal Car Crash on US-95 North of Winnemucca

On Thursday December 29, 2022, at approximately 9:52 A.M. Pacific Time, Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of a vehicle crash US-95, near mile marker 53 in Humboldt County. This location is approximately 53 miles north of Winnemucca.
