GOP Senate leader Heidi Seevers Gansert won’t run for re-election in 2024

After nearly two decades in Nevada politics, Republican Senate Minority Leader Heidi Seevers Gansert (R-Reno) told The Nevada Independent that she will not run for re-election in her competitive Northern Nevada Senate district in 2024, leaving her seat open for the first time since 2016. Indy Explains: How does the Nevada Commission on Ethics work?

The Nevada Commission on Ethics was thrust into the spotlight this week when the eight-member group decided Gov. Joe Lombardo had violated state ethics laws by wearing a sheriff’s badge in campaign ads and was issued a $20,000 fine — the largest ever since the commission’s creation in 1975 — as well as a censure. Though Lombardo may have been top of mind last week, the commission oversees various levels of government. From city councils to county commissions, public officers and employees in the executive branch are overseen and occasionally investigated by the Nevada Commission on Ethics. Employees or officials in the legislative or judicial branches of state government are not subject to commission oversight, but have other entities that oversee ethics rules and conduct.

The closure will result in detouring 12,000 motorists who utilize the overpass daily to just two alternate crossings at Bridge Street and East Winnemucca Boulevard.
