Northern Nevada is a federally designated 'Tech Hub'

The Biden administration named Reno one of its 31 Tech Hubs recently, making the city eligible for federal investment amid Northern Nevada’s transformation into the nucleus of the lithium battery supply chain. The Tech Hubs program was created by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, a bill boosting U.S. investment in semiconductor manufacturing, a globally competitive industry. Designated Tech Hubs, selected based on the presence of key industries and geographic diversity, will receive extra support and resources from the Economic Development Administration and will be eligible for $10 billion in grants over the next five years.

Lombardo calls NV GOP caucus plan ‘detrimental’ and ‘unacceptable’

Gov. Joe Lombardo criticized rules for the Nevada Republican Party’s Feb. 8 presidential caucus barring candidates from participating both in the caucus and in a state-run presidential primary two days earlier, saying it is “unacceptable for the voters.” Speaking during a Nevada Newsmakers interview broadcast Tuesday, the Republican governor said the dueling contests were “detrimental to the candidates,” adding that the situation continues “the chaos that is occurring within the Republican Party,” referring to the selection of a U.S. House speaker.

Federal judge dismisses lawsuit challenging election worker protection bill

A federal district court judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit filed by Sigal Chattah, a prominent Republican attorney and Nevada Republican national committeewoman, seeking to block SB406, a bill passed by the Legislature earlier this year that increased criminal penalties for harassing election workers.

UNR gifted $36 million to create aerospace engineering department

RENO — The University of Nevada, Reno announced a record $36 million individual gift to the University’s Foundation from the George W. Gillemot Foundation. This gift, with Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents approval, will create the George W. Gillemot Aerospace Engineering Department within the College of Engineering, and will provide next generation technology that will transform the visual experience within the George W. Gillemot Dome in the College of Science’s Fleischmann Planetarium.

Project Santa kicks off and hopes to help local families in need

The holidays can be a rush of food, family and togetherness, but for some it can be a real time of stress as they try to figure out how to have a happy holiday while having to choose between getting gifts for children or keeping the lights on and the rent paid. Analyst: GLPI hints at additional investment in Vegas baseball stadium

Nevada Arts Council seeks nominations for the Nevada State Poet Laureate

The Nevada Arts Council oversee the selection process and the chosen individual will be submitted to the Governor for final consideration and appointment. The role of the Poet Laureate is to propagate the art of poetry and encourage literacy and learning throughout the state.

The Nevada Highway Patrol, Northern Command East, has received a grant in the amount of $64,000 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.

State Route 305 to temporarily close for erosion repairs

CARSON CITY — State Route 305 will be closed to through traffic for two days during the week of Nov. 6 as the Nevada Department of Transportation makes permanent repairs following major storm-related erosion.

Bob Scott Campground closes for the Seasonal Forest Rolls Out

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Austin-Tonopah Ranger District has closed the Bob Scott Campground for the winter season with forecasted single-digit temperatures to protect the campground restroom facilities and water lines from freezing and bursting. The campground is located just off U.S. Route 50, approximately 10 miles east of Austin, near the Bob Scott Summit.
