Lusby-Angvick in favor of “business incubators”

Pershing County Economic Development Executive Director Heidi Lusby-Angvick spoke in favor of allowing entrepreneurs to test possible business ideas by renting the commercial kitchen at the Pershing County Community Center. She called the concept a “business incubator.” “The reason I put this on the agenda was because a business that wanted to use the community center kitchen and it was not approved through the commissioners,” she told the PCEDA board last week. “A kitchen incubator was something we discussed as a board several years ago. At that point in time, we did not really have any interest.”

Audit finds problems among state’s child placement providers

State auditors have tasked the Division of Child and Family Services with developing a plan to correct health, safety and regulatory problems plaguing child placement providers that came to light during a recent audit. The corrective action plan, which was presented to state lawmakers on Wednesday and is due in about three months, will come amid a staffing shortage and increasing stress on Nevada’s foster care system. Specifically, the performance audit of the division — conducted from July 1, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2021 — found that:

Handful of competitive primaries could shape GOP chances to gain Assembly ground

Even with more than half of their members not returning to the Legislature, Assembly Republicans are feeling confident heading toward the 2023 session that they can capture more seats in a chamber historically dominated by Democrats, although a GOP majority looks unlikely.  Democrats in 2021 controlled 26 of the 42 seats in the Assembly, down from a high of 29 seats controlled after the 2018 “blue wave” midterm elections. The magic number in the Assembly is 28 — that’s the number of seats required for a two-thirds majority, which greases the skids for any tax increases or procedural maneuvers requiring a “supermajority” vote.

Republicans eye competitive state Senate primary races as potential flips

The battles in Nevada’s state Senate primaries could be a deciding factor in whether Democrats maintain their trifecta of control or Republicans take charge of the upper legislative chamber for the first time since 2015. Democrats hold 11 of 21 seats in the state Senate, but Republicans are eyeing several of those seats as potential flips, given the likelihood of favorable national conditions for the GOP. Nevada state senators serve staggered four-year terms.  Though Democrats are expected to maintain control of both houses after building structural advantages in voter registration through the redistricting process, Republicans are hoping to prevent a two-thirds supermajority (14 seats) that could have implications for tax increases which could, in turn, affect education and other policy matters.
