Is cursive still important? Without learning how to write in cursive, will kids be able to read historical documents?

Reading cursive can be like deciphering another language with its unbroken, swirling letters and nostalgic elegance. It was once natural to most when hand-written correspondence was a necessity and not just a nicety in order to read birthday cards from grandparents, but as the world has become more digitized and hand-written letters and such correspondence has dwindled, it has become more foreign,especially to younger generations.

Land conveyance means plans for new public school in Orovada are underway

Maintaining a quality education for students in remote rural areas is not always easy, but having advocates to help recognize and address the long standing needs within a school and community helps students receive proper access to resources. Through a collaboration of the Humboldt County School District (HCSD), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Lithium Nevada, and the Orovada community, the groundwork for a new K-8 public school is underway. 

Tickets now on sale for spaghetti fundraiser to benefit food bank, soup kitchen

Humboldt County residents are invited to enjoy a delicious dinner this month while raising money to combat food insecurities in the community. The Winnemucca Ministerial Association will host a Spaghetti Fundraiser from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the West Hall, Winnemucca Convention Center. 

IBEW donates to Winnemucca Food Bank —

On Aug. 8 the Winnemucca Battle Mountain IBEW 1245 Retirees Club treasurer Michael Dean met with Barbara Sealy, Director of the Winnemucca Food Bank to donate a check from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1245 in support of that organizations good works in providing needed food assistance to our community. The Retirees Club looks to identify good works in our community to support with the financial help of Local 1245.

Nevada’s first rural case of monkeypox identified in Humboldt County

The state’s first rural case of monkeypox has been identified in Humboldt County. The Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Office of State Epidemiology, confirmed the positive result on Monday, August 8.  According to the state, the individual has not required hospitalization and is isolating at home; no other cases have been identified in Nevada’s rural counties.

DMV to go appointment-only starting this week

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will end most walk-in services and switch to an appointment-only business model starting Monday, August 15. Sustained staff shortages and high customer demand hastened the move to eliminate walk-in services at the DMV’s six largest offices in Carson City, Henderson, Las Vegas and Reno. 

Students return to school with free meals

Students are returning to classrooms with additional resources this year. The State of Nevada has invested $75 million for free school meals in Nevada schools operating the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to continue pandemic recovery and ensure students have food to eat by providing free school breakfast and lunch. NSLP is administered through the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA).

Public invited to provide feedback on planned statewide transportation projects

Through Sept. 8, the Nevada Department of Transportation is inviting the public to comment on planned transportation projects and improvements as outlined in the Annual Work Program (AWP) and annual update of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The public can comment on the draft list of projects contained in the proposed Annual Work Program and STIP before it is finalized for review and potential approval and/or acceptance by the state transportation board and governing federal agencies.
