Firewood permits available at the Winnemucca District Office

With colder weather approaching, people may start thinking about gathering firewood.  Firewood permits are required to gather firewood from public lands across lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management in the Winnemucca District. Woodcutting areas can be found in Humboldt and Pershing counties, as well as portions of Lander, Churchill, and Washoe counties.

WPD receives grant for investigative equipment

The Winnemucca Police Department/City of Winnemucca is pleased to announce it has received $75,749 from the 2021 Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) FY 21 Rural Violent Crime Reduction Initiative for Law Enforcement Agencies (RVCRI). The grant was used to purchase 3D crime scene reconstruction equipment and software. 

Nevada Police Union declares ‘no confidence’ in Sisolak

Members of the union representing state-employed police officers have voted overwhelmingly that they have “no confidence” in Gov. Steve Sisolak given his handling of pay and staffing issues. In a poll taken over the last three days, more than 95 percent of the 473 union members polled said they had “no confidence” in the state’s incumbent governor, who is locked in a tight re-election battle against Republican candidate and Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo.

Judge: Nevada pharmacy board cannot regulate cannabis, must remove from Schedule 1 drug list

A Clark County District Court judge has ruled in favor of local cannabis advocates and declared that the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy is no longer authorized to govern cannabis and must remove marijuana, cannabis, and cannabis derivatives from the controlled substances list.    The ruling issued Wednesday states that “if the [pharmacy] board designates a substance as a ‘controlled substance’ but the designation falls outside the authority delegated by the Legislature, the designation is invalid.” 

Parts of Nye’s ballot hand counting plan blocked by Nevada Supreme Court

Portions of a rural Nevada county’s plan to hand count ballots for the 2022 election are being curtailed by the state Supreme Court, which said in an order Friday the hand-count process cannot be livestreamed and county officials must ensure voters can use all options to verify their signature as provided by state law.

Water infrastructure, mental health services among $750 million in expenditures from dwindling federal aid

More than a year ago, Nevada received pandemic-era aid exceeding $2.7 billion from the federal American Rescue Plan (ARP), spurring massive, multi-million dollar investments into public health, education and affordable housing. During Thursday’s meeting of the Interim Finance Committee, state lawmakers continued the trend, approving more than $750 million in ARP allocations that went toward boosting affordable housing, adding school-based mental health workers, opening a licensed forensic psychiatric hospital, modernizing government technology systems and creating a transplant institute, among other initiatives. Now, state officials have allocated nearly all of Nevada’s ARP funds. 

Joey Gilbert ordered to pay $161,000 in attorneys fees to Lombardo over failed election challenge

A Carson City District Court judge granted an order for additional sanctions against former Republican governor hopeful Joey Gilbert this week, awarding Clark County Sheriff and GOP governor nominee Joe Lombardo more than $161,000 in attorneys fees over Gilbert’s failed legal challenge of the primary results, on top of nearly $88,000 in sanctions awarded in September.

State agencies request $10.8 billion for next general fund budget, up 16 percent

Flush with extra sales and gaming tax revenue, state agencies have requested budgets for the upcoming biennium — stretching from July 2023 through June 2025 — that collectively amount to $10.8 billion, a 16 percent increase over the last two-year general fund budget ($9.3 billion).

Humboldt General Hospital American College of Radiology Accreditation

Humboldt General Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.
