Officials reminding drivers to slow down during holiday season

The Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada State Police are reminding motorists to drive attentively, slow down and move over for traffic response vehicles.

Supreme Court rejects another bump stock ban case

The Supreme Court on Monday again declined to hear a lawsuit involving a Trump-era ban on bump stocks, the gun attachments that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire rapidly like machine guns. The justices' decision not to hear the case leaves in place a lower court decision that rejected bump stock owners' efforts to be compensated for bump stocks they lawfully purchased, but were required to give up after the administration ruled they were illegal. Lower courts had said the case should be dismissed.

Local officials canvass election results

The ballots have been cast and the final results for the 2022 General Election for the local races have been canvassed by county officials.  Humboldt County, City of Winnemucca The Final Election Summary Report was approved by the Winnemucca City Council on Nov. 15 and by the Humboldt County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 18. 

Three hundred Thanksgiving meals will go to students and their families

Blessings come in many different shapes and sizes and Thanksgiving is the perfect time to recount and rejoice in them.  This year, a blessing comes in the shape of a Thanksgiving meal, generously provided through the Winnemucca Boys & Girls Club, and their partnerships with the Truckee Meadows Boys & Girls Club, the Humboldt County School District (HCSD), and Living Stones Church Winnemucca. Thanks to these generous bodies, 300 families in the community can rest easy knowing that they will  have a special holiday meal. 

Beauty in the high desert

The Friends of the Denio Library brought beauty to the high desert with the creation of a garden in the space between the library and the Library Annex this last summer. 

Democrats expected to retain control of Legislature, remain short of supermajority

As the results for the midterm election pour in, Democrats appear to be maintaining control of the Legislature, where they may have a hoped-for supermajority in the Assembly but not in the Senate.   Coming into the midterm elections, Democrats controlled 12 of 21 state Senate seats and 26 of 42 seats in the Assembly. 

Music at the Martin Nov. 18 —

Great Basin Arts and Entertainment has invited the musical talents of the Cary Marin Duo to perform at the Martin hotel on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. A limited number of tickets are for sale for 15 dollars each online at gbae.org or inside the Martin Hotel for the “roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock” concert.  

Winnemucca holds annual Veterans Day Parade

Cool and breezy conditions did not keep people away, as Winnemucca held its annual Veterans Day parade to honor those in the military this past Friday. A number of entries made their way down Bridge Street to the support of the crowd. The parade was sponsored by American Legion Vernon Robins Post No. 5, American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 5, and Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 744.

Nevada Outdoor School receives $20,000 from the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada

Nevada Outdoor School received $20,000 from the Community Foundation of Northern Nevada to support their Nature  In My World school-based programs serving youth in Pershing, Humboldt, Lander, Elko, Eureka, and White Pine Counties. Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) inspires exploration of the natural world, responsible stewardship of our habitat and dedication to community.  Through a variety of youth, training and community focused programs, NOS works to deepen people’s connection to, understanding of and respect for the natural world. 

Korea War veteran film

Honor Flight Nevada, Association of the United States Army General Westmoreland Chapter and Veterans of Foreign Wars Silver State Post 3396 are hosting the premier of “Devotion,” a  film based on the book “Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice” by Adam Makos. The showing is Nov. 23 at the Galaxy Theatre Victorian in Sparks, 1250 Victorian Ave.

As most of you realize, the 9th Annual Up and AATT (Alzheimer’s Awareness Turkey Trot) ‘em draws near – Thanksgiving morning, November 24th, with registration and rally starting at 7:30am and 3k, 5k, or 8k run/walk/ride led by the Lowry Wrestling Team starting at 8am. 

Legislature funds programs to support seniors and Nevadans with disabilities

The ability to support Nevada’s seniors, people with disabilities and vulnerable populations will be improved with funds allocated during the Oct. 20 Legislative Interim Finance Committee (IFC) meeting. 

Elko County hunting tragedy a sad reminder on the importance of firearm safety

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) sends its deepest condolences to the family of a 48-year-old Winnemucca man who died last week after he was accidentally shot by his friend on a hunting trip. Elko County Sheriff’s Deputies were contacted the morning of Tuesday, November 1 with a report of a hunter who had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest in the North Pequop Mountains.
