Being a dedicated and loving caregiver to someone with Alzheimer’s Disease or other types of dementia is a very generous and very involved commitment. Finding the time and means for self care can be very difficult as a caregiver, but the Age-and Dementia-Friendly Winnemucca Project (ADF), a partner of Dementia Friendly Nevada, and the Pleasant Senior Center, located on Lay St., work together to create a free and purposeful time for caretakers to get much needed breaks every Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Director Tony Wasley announced he will retire effective Dec. 2022, ending an over 25-year tenure with the agency. For the last nearly 10 years, Wasley has served as the agency’s Director. Wasley was appointed by Republican Governor Brian Sandoval, under who he served six years and then was reappointed by Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak nearly four years ago.

More opportunities are coming for aspiring Nevada teachers to receive up to $24,000 dollars as they pursue a teaching career. The Nevada Department of Education is investing another $2.5 million dollars in teacher recruitment through Teach Nevada Scholarship Grants. The Nevada State Board of Education (SBE) approved the new award as part of phase two of the Teach Nevada Scholarship (TNVS). In April SBE approved $2.4 million for a total of $4.9 million in scholarships this year.

The Nevada Department of Education (NDE) announced today that the statewide graduation rate increased for the Class of 2022, despite challenges posed by the pandemic. The graduation rate for the Class of 2022 rose to 81.7 percent. That is up from 81.3 percent the year before.
The Great Basin College Health Sciences and Human Services Department will now have the opportunity to hire a full-time faculty position and equip the skills lab for the Respiratory Therapy Program in thanks to recent funding from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. Total funding provided to support the department and programming is $799,995.
