BATTLE MOUNTAIN - This fall, school cafeterias across the country are undergoing exciting changes and Nevada is no exception! As you may have heard, new federal nutrition standards for school meals which aim to ensure that meals are healthy and well balanced are being put into action. The new standards were put in place in an effort to help provide students with the nutrition they need to succeed at school, and be a center point for teaching children healthy eating habits. Now is a great time to encourage your child to choose school lunch!
Editor:On Saturday, Dec. 22, my eldest son, my daughter and I were traveling to Winnemucca when we hit a patch of black ice on Interstate 80 about 10 miles west of Battle Mountain. We went off the road, into the median and eventually stopped, upside down. We were all wearing our seatbelts, and thankfully there were no major injuries. As it turns out, we were one of at least five vehicles within about a 200-yard stretch of highway that went off the road within about 15 minutes. With all of the other activity, we were still well taken care of by helpful Samaritans, emergency personnel and the tow company. We would like to thank the following people and wish them all a very safe and Happy New Year: Ron with Komatsu and the gentleman with him; Mike with Lander County EMS; troopers Eaton and Tanner with the Nevada Highway Patrol; Sady, Shauna, Erin, Dr. Myers and the rest of the staff at Battle Mountain General Hospital; the crew from Atlas Towing; and anyone else that I may have inadvertently overlooked that helped our family or one of the other parties involved.Matt McCartySpring Creek
