Cooney announces resignation

In praise of Lowry band, choir

Editor:If you have never attended a band/choir performance at Lowry High School, I highly recommend it.Recently I was invited to attend the last two band performances/fundraisers for the Lowry High School band. I attended them both and was not disappointed. The food was good, but it was the band's/choir's performance that I was in awe of.The pieces performed were somewhat difficult and the students seemed to take that task on with practice, determination and a desire to perform well. For high school students to come together as one and perform that well says a lot for who is in leadership as well as the students to accept what is required by that leader. As I watched and listened I could sense a deep respect and admiration that not only the students have for band/choir director Mr. Criddle, but that he had for the students as well. Mr. Criddle showed that he believes in the capability of those he teaches and it was displayed by the way the band/choir performed. My hats off to you Mr. Criddle for a job well done, and to you Lowry High band/choir students I applaud you. It was a joyful and entertaining evening. Take a bow.Sincerely, Barbara Kuskie

Put interest of community first

Editor:Two years ago I had an emergency health situation and there was no time to fly to Reno and there would not have been time for a surgeon to fly to Winnemucca. At 6:30 p.m. on a Sunday evening I was admitted to the HGH emergency and within a couple of hours Dr. Kim was operating on me. She saved my life. I was in the hospital for 16 days and she came to check on me morning and night for that length of time.If a surgeon had to be flown in from Reno or elsewhere I would not be here today. If you fly someone in to do the surgery will they stay for 16 days to check on the patient to make sure that they are OK and that there are no complications?I think that Winnemucca is much better with a resident surgeon rather than flying someone in from wherever when they are needed. I also think that by flying patients to Reno for surgery you will be sending a lot of revenue to Reno for surgeries that should stay here in Winnemucca. If Dr. Kim is overworked, why can't there be another resident surgeon hired here in Winnemucca to help her?We have an extraordinarily beautiful facility here in Winnemucca, why can't everyone get along and use it to do what is best for the citizens of Winnemucca? I hope that personalities can be overlooked and we can keep our hospital for the citizens of Winnemucca.Rene M. Vesco

What do you want to do with the trash?

Editor's note: This is the second of a two-part Guest Commentary on proposals for Winnemucca's trash. The first part of the Guest Commentary appeared in the May 18 - 21 edition of the Sun.

Despite O'Reilly's opinion, Iceland's doing just fine

I've complained about the Humboldt Sun's choice of commentary from the "right" before, but this time Mr. O'Reilly has clearly outdone himself in his 6/19 - 21 commentary. Surely there are better qualified conservative commentary writers you can utilize who aren't known for consistently promulgating outright lies.
