WINNEMUCCA - The American Red Cross Winnemucca service center will be accepting nominations to honor local heroes and citizens at the 2013 Real Heroes Celebration on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Winnemucca Convention Center-East Hall.

Preschool completes school year -

Christ Lutheran Preschool completed its 11th year and celebrated with several special events during May. The pre-K classes visited kindergarten. Each of the four classes performed in a Spring Program and families enjoyed fellowship together with refreshments following each performance. The school year ended with a special play day with an obstacle course, exploration of bubbles and painting outdoors. The pre-K classes concluded the year with a farewell picnic for families.

Atna suspends Pinson Mine operations

WINNEMUCCA - Atna Resources announced Wednesday that operations at Pinson Mine would be suspended due to the declining gold prices, and 21 of its 25 employees were laid off, according to Valerie Kimball, corporate secretary and manager of investor relations for Atna.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - A hearing will be held in the Third Judicial District Court in Lyon County on July 29 at 9 a.m. to decide whether or not former Battle Mountain resident Alexander Steven King can withdraw his guilty plea for first degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon, according to the district court clerk's office.

COURTESY PHOTOBootstraps is a group of 18-25-year-olds who are hired by the Lander County Cooperative Extension office under grants provided by various entities. The young adults are hired to provide them job and life skills, in addition to doing pinion and juniper removal to assist with sage grouse habitat restoration. They are currently working under a grant provided by Bureau of Land Management for projects in Grass Valley, which is located in Lander County about 30 miles north of Highway 50.
