Stewardship success in Santa Rosas Volunteers to restore burn area in Nevada

WINNEMUCCA - Dedicated Winnemucca community members volunteered their time out on the Santa Rosa Ranger District in Paradise Valley on April 21 and had tremendous stewardship success. Six hardworking volunteers came together just in time for Earth Day to help revive land seriously damaged by a wildfire that took place in 2011 out on Tom Basin.

WGS student wins state handwriting contest

WINNEMUCCA - Every year approximately 325,000 students participate in the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest. This contest is open to students in grades kindergarten through eighth and is separated into private and public schools.

WINNEMUCCA - Winnemucca police officers were dispatched to East Fourth Street for the report of an injury accident involving two motorcycles early Wednesday morning.

'Run, Ride, Walk for the Cure' this Saturday at French Ford Middle School All event proceeds benefit cancer victims in Humboldt, Lander counties

WINNEMUCCA - This Saturday, May 12, all northern Nevada residents are invited to "Blast Cancer" as part of the "The LaRena Smith Bengoa Run, Ride or Walk for the Cure."

School board to hold budget hearing

WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County School District Board of School Trustees will hold a public hearing on the fiscal year 2013 tentative budget next week.The meeting will be held on Wednesday at noon in the Lowry High School library.

Newmont Mining Corp. recently announced donations to three area organizations.

Tom Stannard, a Newmont risk management representative, (left) presents checks for $1,000 and $500 to Darrel Field, marketing and special events coordinator with the Winnemucca Convention Center. The $1,000 donation is in support of the Run-A-Mucca event and the $500 for Fifties Fever.

BLM OKs rangeland cheatgrass research project

WINNEMUCCA - The Bureau of Land Management Winnemucca District has issued an authorization to Dr. Jeremy James, a research ecologist with the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center in Burns, Ore., to conduct a four-year study on seedling establishment within cheatgrass dominated areas of the district.

Frontier Community Coalition hosts Cultural Diversity Dinner Fundraiser

WINNEMUCCA - "I have a dream," Pauline Salla began. "I have a dream that every culture in Humboldt, Lander and Pershing counties come together to celebrate their diversity. It is what makes our counties great, the very fabric that knits us together. I have a dream that these cultures will celebrate their diversity at a dinner with authentic foods from their culture along with dance and song."

Missoula Children's Summer Theater Camps coming to Winnemucca in July and August

WINNEMUCCA - Kids in first through 12th grades are invited to save the dates for Missoula Children's Theatre's eighth annual summer theater camp. The camp will run July 9 - 14 for "The Pied Piper" and Aug. 6 - 11 for "Red Riding Hood." Young thespians can be a part of a full theater production and learn the craft of performing on stage, all the way from auditions on Monday to the final two performances on Saturday.

BLM opens Black Rock Station near Gerlach

WINNEMUCCA - The Black Rock Station visitor contact center will open on Wednesday for the 2012 season.

Denio-area wildfire contained at 842 acres

WINNEMUCCA - Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management, Denio Volunteer Fire Department and Wildfire Support Group Resources responded to a vegetation fire off of state Route 140 near mile marker 47 on Friday afternoon.
