Justice of the Peace application period begins Jan. 3

WINNEMUCCA - Humboldt County Clerk Tami Spero would like to remind all interested parties that the Justice of the Peace application process opens Jan. 3, 2012, and runs through Jan. 13, 2012.

Water outlook abnormally dry for tri-county area

WINNEMUCCA - The water outlook for the Humboldt, Pershing and Lander county areas is being classified as abnormally dry right now by the Drought Monitor, according to Gary Barbato with the National Weather Service out of Reno.

Radon program to be held locally

WINNEMUCCA - January is National Radon Action Month, and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering a radon program in Winnemucca on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Humboldt County Extension Office, 1085 Fairgrounds Road.

Spotlight on McDermitt John Hill - Class of 1973

OROVADA - Last spring was the beginning of the 150th anniversary of the most devastating war in the history of our country. The first battle of the Civil War began when the Confederacy fired on Fort Sumter in April of 1861, and by the time the South surrendered at Appomattox in April of 1865 some 618,222 Americans had lost their lives. Most of us are familiar with names from that war such as Abraham Lincoln who, as president carried the burden of a nation divided during his watch, and was himself assassinated just days after the war ended; and General Grant, who was voted in as president of a reunited country a few years later. There was General Robert E. Lee who broke the vow that he took as a West Point graduate to defend the Union, when he found that he couldn't fight against his fellow Virginians. But, what are the stories of some of the other soldiers who participated in this terribly sad event in American history.

Denio's Make-a-Gift Day a success

The Denio Library held its annual Make-a-Gift Day for the children of Denio and Fields, Ore. Volunteers led the children in making gifts for Christmas. This year Friends of the Library members, teachers and community volunteers helped the children make pine cone bird feeders, stained glass ornaments and crackers, fleece-tied pillows, beaded ornaments and decorated jean pockets.

January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month AVA helping to raise awareness about issue

WINNEMUCCA - January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, as well as National Mentoring Month. The Advocates for Victims of Abuse-Sixth Judicial District Court Appointed Special Advocates has teamed up with the National Human Trafficking Resource Center's Polaris Project and Girls Educating and Mentoring Services (GEMS), to help raise awareness about this serious problem that still exists in the United States and around the globe.

Tri-State Calico Wild Horse and Burro Gather resumes

WINNEMUCCA - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Winnemucca District resumed gather operations for the Tri-State Calico Complex Wild Horse and Burro Gather on Tuesday, Jan. 3, on the eastern side of the complex, south of Denio Junction.

Local store clerks cited for selling alcohol to minors

WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Police Department, in cooperation with the Humboldt County Juvenile Department, conducted an enforcement operation to determine if businesses were selling alcoholic beverages to persons under the age of 21 on Friday, Dec.23.

Winds fan roadside fire in Valmy

WINNEMUCCA - A small wildfire fanned by winds broke out close to the Mote exit on Interstate 80 on Dec. 30 around 11 a.m. According to Valmy Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Morrison, the fire was extinguished in short order by Valmy and Battle Mountain crews.
