WASHINGTON - Recently, on National Rural Health Day, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced more than $10 million in grants through two U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs to improve access to health care for rural Americans across the nation. The secretary also highlighted initiatives created by the Affordable Care Act that specifically address critical health needs in rural communities.

A Pizza Hut employee fought off an armed man's attempts to rob the restaurant Sunday night. At about 9:45 p.m. on Nov. 23, a man entered the pizza restaurant, armed with a shotgun and demanded money.
CARSON CITY - The Nevada Department of Transportation has promoted two staff members to executive positions overseeing department operations and planning, respectively. Reid Kaiser has been appointed as NDOT assistant director of operations and Sondra Rosenberg will serve as assistant director of planning.
The Denio Library held its annual Halloween Potluck and Games at the Denio Community Hall. School children and their families from Denio and Fields, Ore., attended the event. The children trick-or-treated the Denio area and then came back to the hall for the costume and pumpkin carving contest, the potluck, and games. Parents and community members volunteered to lead games and act as judges for the contests. The Denio Library would like to thank the volunteers for helping us make it a fun evening for all.
The Nevada Department of Veterans Services has actively pursued and been awarded various federal grants in 2014 which are helping expand the department's outreach efforts throughout the state. Such grants are assisting in expanding transportation assistance in rural areas, facility expansion and veterans outreach programs.

JOYCE SHEEN • The Humboldt SunIt's a mess right now, but the work being done inside the Winnemucca Convention Center West Hall will result in remodeled restrooms. The facility was built in 1981, and it was high time for a facelift for the well-used comfort stations. The remodeling work is being done on a time and materials basis by Michael Clay construction - the restroom refurbishing project is estimated to cost about $18,000.
LAS VEGAS - Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto today called upon the Federal Trade Commission to update the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) in order to reflect realities of today's marketplace and better protect consumers from unscrupulous telemarketers.
Humboldt County Commissioners all said they hope to choose a county administrator at the end of the special meeting they've set for Dec. 2. Each said they believe the opportunity to spend some more time with their top three choices will result in a clear choice, but if not, they said also all said they are prepared to ask Nevada POOL/PACT to start the entire process over again with a new request for applications.
RENO - Despite its location away from major population centers, a swarm of earthquakes in the far northwest corner of Nevada is attracting attention as it continues to rumble residents this week with several magnitude 3.0 earthquakes, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake on Nov. 21 and a magnitude 4.3 on Nov. 17.
