State financial report shows Nevada continues to recover

CARSON CITY - State Controller Kim Wallin has released the financial reports for the 2013 fiscal year which ended June 30. The Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) and the Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR) describe in detail the financial position of the State of Nevada as well as the changes from prior years. The CAFR is prepared by the Controller's office in accordance with state laws and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for governments.

Davis appointed as regional SBA administrator

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Small Business Administration announced the appointment of Donna Davis as Regional Administrator for Region IX, which encompasses Nevada, Arizona, California, Guam and Hawaii.

Home Again averages 1,000 calls per month in first year

LAS VEGAS - Marking its first year in operation, the "Home Again: Nevada Homeowner Relief Program" generated more than 12,000 calls, an average of more than 1,000 per month, from Nevadans throughout the state to its toll-free help line (855) HLP4NEV (457-4638).

Cooperative Extension hosts food safety training Jan. 30 and 31

RENO - The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the Nevada Department of Agriculture will host the Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) Training for food safety Jan. 30 and 31. The training will focus on on-farm food-safety practices related to fruit and vegetable production. Participants will learn principles of good agricultural and handling practices.

BLM seeks public comment on lands nominated for oil and gas exploration and development

ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Elko District is making available for public review an Environmental Assessment (EA) for parcels of public land nominated for lease in the 2014 Competitive Oil & Gas Lease Sale. These parcels have the potential for future oil and gas exploration and development.

Is your trunk roadside emergency ready?

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Nearly all drivers could improve what is in their trunk to be better prepared for roadside emergencies. A new survey by State Farm and KRC Research shows two-thirds of drivers (67 percent) had some sort of "junk" in their trunk ranging from car detailing equipment to toys and used food or drink containers. Additionally, drivers shared a variety of strange "junk" items in their trunk including an old gorilla costume to an inflatable sheep to a wedding dress. Getting rid of the "junk" (non-emergency supplies) and adding the right supplies will help people deal with the unexpected and get back on the road.

Washington Federal buys B of A branches

SEATTLE - Washington Federal, Inc., parent company of Washington Federal, has entered into an agreement with Bank of America to acquire 23 retail branches in Nevada and Arizona.

CARSON CITY - The 2014 Nevada Farm Bureau photo contest is underway, sponsored by the Nevada Farm Bureau Women's Leadership Committee.

SBA disaster loans available to Nevada small businesses

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Small, nonfarm businesses in 17 Nevada counties - including Humboldt, Pershing and Lander - and neighboring counties of Arizona, California, Idaho and Oregon are eligible to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

LHS names top students

Grade 9: Madison McBrideMs. Langham nominated Madison McBride for student of the month saying, "Madison is an excellent example of what a conscientious student really is. She is intent on understanding the material presented, knowing that it is the foundation for her next math class. She is willing to work with any partner or in any group assigned, helping others understand if needed. She questions what she is told if something doesn't sound right to her, wanting to make sure it is really true. All of these things Madison does with a pleasant attitude, a smile on her face, and respect for her teachers and her fellow students. She is indeed a pleasure to have in class!Grade 10: Mickey DonovanMickey was nominated for student of the month by Mrs.James. Mrs.James stated that Mickey is a diligent worker, and a leader by example. He is a wonderful addition to the stagecraft class; his creativity and artistic talents are displayed in his work. It is a pleasure being his teacher.Grade 11: Chelsea BakerMrs. James nominated Chelsea for student of the month stating that Chelsea not only acts in the plays, but she is the entire wardrobe department. She is a very hard worker and produces beautiful costumes. Stagecraft would not be the same without her.Grade 12: Jessica FrostMrs. James nominated Jessica for student of the month saying that, Jessica is a wonderful student to have in class. She has great attendance and works well with others. When the class had 30 notecards due for their research paper, Jessica had completed 102. She is a wonderful contribution in many diverse ways in the classroom.
