Winnemucca resident dead after fatal I80 crash

Accident occurred west of Elko

WINNEMUCCA - A Winnemucca resident died as a result of a fatal car crash on Interstate 80 near mile marker 269 last Saturday, according to a Nevada Highway Patrol news release.

Federal firefighting agencies recruiting summer firefighters

RENO - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is accepting applications for summer seasonal firefighting and dispatching positions for the 2014 fire season. Applications must be submitted no later than January 14, 2014 using the Office of Personnel Management's USAJobs website at https://www.usajobs.gov to receive first consideration for most positions.

Senior Center concert begins after the Parade of Lights x

WINNEMUCCA - Mary Kaye Knaphus will be on stage in Winnemucca on Saturday, Dec. 7 right after the Parade of Lights. "Mary Kaye's Cowboy Christmas" concert is a fundraiser for the Humboldt County Senior Center and will be held at the Pleasant Center, 1480 Lay St., Winnemucca. The full concert begins at 7 p.m., and will have an intermission. Tickets are $15 and there is limited seating, so get there early!

WINNEMUCCA - There are several ways to capture the Christmas spirit this weekend in Winnemucca. From an art show at the Humboldt Museum to a retelling of the classic tale "A Christmas Carol," there's something for everyone.

New sign on its way -

MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the SunA crane removed the old Chamber of Commerce sign on the corner of Winnemucca Boulevard and Melarkey Street Tuesday in preparation to install a new electronic sign. Nevada Signs will be providing the new 60-inch by 99-inch marquee. The cost of the new sign - $51,500 - includes installation, training, and the software needed to run the programs.

Hanson Street accident -

MICHAEL MICHAELSEN • Special to the SunAn accident interrupted traffic around 5:30 p.m. Monday on the Hanson Street overpass when a vehicle rear-ended another vehicle stopped for the traffic signal. The driver of the stopped vehicle was transported to Humboldt General Hospital. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured. The incident did not involve any arrests.

Resource Advisory Council Sage-grouse subcommittee to meet Dec. 13

CARSON CITY - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Sierra Front-Northwestern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC), Sage-grouse subcommittee will meet via conference call on Dec. 13, 2013, at the BLM Nevada State Office, 1340 Financial Blvd. in Reno. The conference call is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will be held in the Peavine conference room. The public is invited to sit in.
