Funds available for water pollution prevention

CARSON CITY - The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection has nearly $1.25 million dollars in federal funding available to provide grant assistance for projects that prevent or control nonpoint source water pollution, the leading cause of water quality impairment in Nevada.

BLM schedules Saturday tour of future wild horse water/bait trapping gather area in Elko County

ELKO - The Bureau of Land Management's Elko District is inviting the public to participate in a tour of Cherry Spring within the Maverick-Medicine Herd Management Area (HMA), where a wild horse water/bait trapping gather operation is planned.

Children rehearse for staging of 'Alice in Wonderland' Saturday at WGS

Local children were rehearsing Wednesday for Saturday's (July 27) production of "Alice in Wonderland." Two performances are scheduled at Winnemucca Grammar School - one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. According to Jean Kinney, hometown chairperson for Missoula Children's Theater, a total of 56 children are involved in the production. Under the sponsorship of Northern Nevada Arts Council in Winnemucca, MCT conducts a week-long acting workshop for local children from first through 12th grade. "We have been sponsoring these workshops for nine years now," Kinney said. The workshops and performances are held at Winnemucca Grammar School, thanks to the principal, Doreen Kitras, Kinney said. This workshop will feature "Alice in Wonderland," and will also be held at WGS.

Nevada Outdoor School camp for girls offers activities, adventure

Six-day camp will include a trip to Elko as well as local fun

WINNEMUCCA - Nevada Outdoor School is sending out an invitation to all fifth, sixth and seventh grade girls to attend The New Horizons Girls Camp. The camp will be held July 30 through Aug. 4, and registration will close Monday, July 29, at noon.

Physician elected as new chairman of Nevada State Board of Health elects new chairman

CARSON CITY - The Nevada State Board of Health elected Edwin (Flip) Homansky, M.D. as its new chairman. Dr. Homansky has been a member of the Board of Health since April 2, 2008. He replaces Roger Works, DVM, who has served since 2001.

CARSON CITY (AP) - Taxable sales in Nevada jumped 6.1 percent in May from the same month a year ago, with gains fed by big boosts in construction and vehicle sales, the Department of Taxation reported.

RENO - Building on more than 12 years of successful outreach Nevada's largest public utility, NV Energy, the NV Energy Foundation and DRI, the environmental research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, have renewed their commitment to the state's K-12 educators and next generation of scientists and engineers.

Donation to Hope Tree -

JESSICA POWELL • The Humboldt SunHumboldt General Hospital CEO Jim Parrish presents a $500 check to Alaine Nye and Yoana Chavez from the Frontier Community Action Agency for their Hope Tree program. This brings the hospital's total donation to $1,500. The HGH donation, combined with a generous donation from Hycroft, has allowed the FCAA to reach its goal of $5,000, according to Nye. The Hope Tree program will create grief support groups for the community and training for facilitators begins Sept. 5. Nye encourages anyone who would like to volunteer or participate to contact the FCAA at (775)-623-9003.
