RENO – The organizers of the Burning Man festival narrowly passed their environmental inspection after mass torrential rains closed roads, jammed traffic and forced many to walk miles barefoot through muck, leaving trails of debris in the remote Nevada desert, according to a Nov. 29 report from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
An advanced geothermal project has begun pumping carbon-free electricity onto the Nevada grid to power Google data centers there, Google announced Nov. 28. Getting electrons onto the grid for the first time is a milestone many new energy companies never reach, said Tim Latimer, CEO and co-founder of Google’s geothermal partner in the project, Houston-based Fervo Energy.

After a year of disarray, repairs to the bridge which carries West Winnemucca Boulevard over I-80 at exit 173 is anticipated to begin in the coming weeks, according to Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) officials. The repair requires special engineering which was originally approved back in the spring 2022, but due to the complex nature of the repairs needed — known as heat straightening — a specific type of engineer and sub-contractors are required in order to rehab the scraping and slight misalignment of the bottom of the bridge girder, which were reportedly difficult to secure.

Backers of an initiative to create an independent redistricting commission for Nevada are again launching an effort to get a question on the ballot. Two initiatives were filed recently with the secretary of state’s office on behalf of Fair Maps Nevada, a group led by College of Southern Nevada professor Sondra Cosgrove, who also spearheaded the 2020 and 2022 efforts to change Nevada’s redistricting process.

CARSON CITY — During remarks at the Western Governors Association Winter Meeting, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced that the Bureau of Land Management is seeking public input on a proposed geothermal exploration project on public lands in Lyon County. BLM is developing a draft environmental assessment for the proposed Wabuska Geothermal Exploration Project, which would assess the potential for future geothermal development on approximately 54 acres of public lands north of Yerington.
With an estimated 1997 people set to be working on the Thacker Pass lithium mine site throughout construction, Lithium Americas is constructing a temporary workforce hub in East Winnemucca, with the first units having arrived in October and the final units expected to arrive in February 2024. The noticeable construction began in January and will hopefully be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to Lithium officials.
