The Winnemucca Junior High School girls basketball team will hold a few more open gyms for the upcoming season.
LAS VEGAS — Oakland Athletics executive Sandy Dean told the Las Vegas Stadium Authority that the club does not expect to spend the entire $380 million in public money allocated to build a new stadium in Las Vegas. Dean said the A’s plan to spend $350 million of those funds, leaving $30 million on the table. He also told the authority that the club plans to finance $300 million of the stadium cost, but no lenders have been secured.
The quarter mile dirt track on Seven Troughs Road will see lots of action over Frontier Days Weekend. Lovelock Speedway will host races this Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m.
This Sunday, Elmhurst Avenue will close to traffic so the Frontier Days crowd can race, pull and carry for fun and cash prizes. They almost make it look easy. Elmhurst’s trees provide shade for the spectators. Vendors sell cold drinks.
Kalani Rodriguez claimed the top spot in the annual Doc Verner Memorial junior golf tournament on Wednesday, July 24, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course with a round of 104.

CARSON CITY, NV – The Nevada Division of State Parks is pleased to announce the availability of approximately $1,000,000.00 in federal funds for outdoor recreation development and acquisition projects through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) program. All local governments, including counties, cities, towns, general improvement districts, and Native American tribal governments are potentially eligible for the 50:50 matching grants offered through the program.
CANYON COUNTY, Idaho — Melissa Fay Calumpit and Rosalie Lynn Morris were charged on Friday, July 19, with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the July 12 homicide of Travis Haywood Calumpit in Idaho. Both women are from Battle Mountain. Travis Haywood Calumpit, a Parma, Idaho resident, died from a gunshot wound, according to the Canyon County Coroner.
Pershing County Commissioner Joe Crim and his hunting guide face one felony charge each in Washoe County for illegally killing a bear during last year’s season. A criminal complaint filed against Crim and Michael Stremler, owner of Secret Pass Outfitters, alleges the two killed a bear in the area above Bowers Mansion in Washoe Valley, which is closed to the hunt.
Lunches are served each weekday at noon and soup and croutons is served at 11 a.m. the Pleasant Senior Center, 1480 Lay Street. Lunches are open to the public. Suggested minimum donation is $4 for seniors age 60 and older. Visitors must be 16 years or older. Their meal is $10.
