Utility regulators shoot down NV Energy’s proposed rate change for Northern Nevada

Nevada utility regulators have unanimously denied a request by NV Energy to raise the basic service charge for its Northern Nevada customers by 175 percent, instead on Tuesday awarding the utility just a fraction of its requested amount. NV Energy, the state’s largest electric utility, had sought to increase the basic service charge — the flat rate customers pay just to have electric service — by $28.80 per month for single-family residential users, while simultaneously lowering how much customers pay for actual energy use.

Bautista preparing for biggest UFC fight to date

It’s not too often that Winnemucca’s Mario Bautista gets to fight close to home as part of his UFC career. The Lowry High School graduate gets the rare chance to do that, as he is part of the UFC 307 fight card set for Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. “It will be nice to fight close to home,” Bautista said. “The closest that I fought is probably Vegas. It gives family and friends the chance to make it out here to see me fight, which is nice.”

Barto wins barrel racing average at White Pine rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its second stop of the fall season in Ely on Sept. 7-8 for the White Pine rodeo. Humboldt County’s Brynn Barto led the way in the barrel racing average with a time of 34.933 seconds. She won the first performance at 17.339 and was the runner-up in the second performance.

What do you do when you have to play your next four matches on field turf? If you are the Lowry High School girls soccer team, you find the one of the few places in Winnemucca that has field turf. The Lady Bucks practiced in the high school courtyard to get ready for their Lyon County road trip.

Buckaroos blank Dust Devils, tie Vaqueros

The Lowry High School boys soccer team remained in the hunt for a playoff berth in the Northern 3A with a win and tie at home this past weekend. Lowry beat Dayton 1-0 on Thursday and played to a scoreless tie against Fernley on Saturday.

The Battle Mountain High School football team dropped a 28-6 decision to Dayton on Friday night at Tim Knight Field in Battle Mountain.

Battle Mountain splits with Silver Stage, Sierra Lutheran

The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team came away with a split of two Northern 2A matches this past weekend at home and sit at 4-3 in league play. “The matches were fought hard this weekend as we tried out a new rotation as we are nearing the down slide of our season,” said BMHS coach Julia Ramirez. “We are working at utilizing more hitters on the net.”

Pershing soccer ties Fernley; beats Whittell

Last week, the Pershing County High School soccer team tied the visiting Fernley Vaqueros and beat the Whittell Warriors on the road. The Mustangs now have a 3-5-1 record overall and a 2-5-1 league record.

Pershing volleyball goes 7-0 in the league

The Mustang volleyball team defended their undefeated status in two league games last week. On Wednesday, they beat the visiting Yerington Lions in four sets (25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 25-13). Saturday, they traveled to Tahoe City and trounced the Lakers in five sets (27-25, 25-21, 25-27, 20-25, 15-9). To make the Mustang win even better, the North Tahoe Lakers are the defending State champions.
