Federal court says Mississippi can't count late ballots but the ruling doesn't affect Nov. 5 vote

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A federal court said Mississippi cannot count mail-in ballots that arrive shortly after Election Day, however the decision was not expected to affect the Nov. 5 election. Although the appellate judges firmly asserted that counting late ballots violates federal law, even if those ballots are postmarked by Election Day, the judges stopped short of an order immediately blocking Mississippi from continuing the practice. Their ruling noted federal court precedents have discouraged court actions that change established procedures shortly before an election.

Battle Mountain FFA wins in UNR wildfire preparedness program

RENO — Nevada Youth are taking action to prepare their communities for wildfire. This summer, teams of Nevada youth from grades K-12 participated in the first ever Nevada Youth Wildfire Preparedness Challenge organized by the University of Nevada, Reno Extension’s Living With Fire Program. This year’s grand prize-winning team, the Battle Mountain Future Farmers Association (FFA) walked away with a whopping $1,500 prize, sponsored by the NV Energy Foundation in recognition of the team’s outstanding work in their community.

NDOT hiring for temporary winter highway maintenance positions

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation is preparing to keep state roads clear when winter snow flies by hiring temporary highway maintenance workers to help with snow plowing and anti-icing operations, among other duties. Applications are being accepted for temporary winter highway maintenance positions in Elko, Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Eureka, Wells and other areas.

Department of Education announces 12 grants

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the selection of 12 disadvantaged communities across the country to receive a total of $18.9 million in financial assistance grants. These grants, awarded through the Community Capacity Building Grant Program (CCBGP), are designed to address reinvestment in communities affected by long-standing nuclear defense and research missions and currently hosting environmental cleanup sites.

Pershing County girls soccer splits league matches

The Pershing County High School girls soccer week started with a 4-0 loss to Fernley on the road. The Mustangs had better luck on senior night when they beat Battle Mountain 6-0 in Lovelock. They now stand at 7-9-2 overall and 5-9-2 in the league.

Last Friday, on a cold October night in Lovelock, the Pershing County High School football team beat visiting West Wendover 52-6. The future Mustangs added to the festive mood, as youth players and fans met at the south end zone for the Mustang spell out.

Coral Academy grabs home win over Battle Mountain

As it was in the Northern 3A this past weekend, the Northern 2A saw a little shakeup in the standings, as the Battle Mountain High School football team lost 20-19 to Coral Academy on Saturday afternoon at Reno High School. The Longhorns entered the contest in third place at 3-1 in the Northern 2A and are still third at 3-2 but the standings are much closer for the final playoff spots.

Battle Mountain cross country runs at Lowry Invitational

Three members of the Battle Mountain High School cross country team made the short trip to Winnemucca on Saturday morning for the Lowry Invitational at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. The two races were pushed back about 30 minutes due to frost on the golf course after the cold night put temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Danielle Madalena had the best finish for Battle Mountain in 21st with a time of 24:37.

Jorgenson leads BMHS at NIAA 2A State Girls Golf

The Battle Mountain High School girls golf team featured three golfers at the NIAA 2A State Girls Golf Championship last week at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. Jaylee Jorgenson paced the Longhorns with a two-day total of 273 to finish 26th.
