Battle Mountain boys tipoff Northern 2A season with a pair of road wins

Perhaps tougher than thought to be, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team opened Northern 2A action with road wins at Pershing County and Coral Academy Science. The Longhorns shot just 22% from the 3-point line on Friday against the Mustangs, as Pershing County stayed within striking distance the entire night. Battle Mountain eventually held on for a 54-50 victory.

Bengochea, Kruz Gomez, Patterson and Harber win titles in home tournament

The Lowry High School wrestling team found itself back atop the standings of its own Cody Louk Invitational on the strength of seven wrestlers in the finals. Pete Bengochea at 113 pounds, Kruz Gomez (126), Randy Patterson (175) and Jhett Harber (190) captured individual titles for the Buckaroos. Edward Jones (106), Erick Valencia (165) and Logan Jonas (285) each finished second.

Pershing County girls basketball team goes 2-1 for the week

The Pershing County High School girls basketball team started their week by beating Coral Academy of Science 46-13 in Reno. Last Friday. the Mustangs played their first home game of the year this past Friday night and lost 39-29 to Battle Mountain. On Saturday, Pershing County collected a 35-25 win against the visiting West Wendover Wolverines.

PCHS wrestlers compete in multiple tourneys

Last weekend, the Pershing County High School wrestling team competed at Cody Louk, McQueen JV and Nevada Queens tournaments. "We sent kids to three different events and positives and success were everywhere," said coach Mike Brooks. At the Cody Louk in Winnemucca, the Mustangs finished eighth out of 28 teams, no small feat considering they sent only six wrestlers: Jeff Elerick (144), Angelo Gibson (157), Israel Knight (150), Wyatt Hughes (175), Jake Trowbridge (190) and Justin Carruth (132).

Lombardo, lawmakers will have $12.4 billion for next budget in a slight bump from 2023

Gov. Joe Lombardo and Nevada legislators will have more than $12.4 billion to build the state’s next two-year general fund budget, a record-setting projected tax revenue forecast approved Monday by a state economic panel. The projection by the state’s Economic Forum — a group of five private-sector economists — marks a more than 7 percent increase compared with the last two-year budget period, which ends in June.

Volunteers came back to nonprofits in 2023, after the pandemic tanked participation

From foster grandparents who volunteer at an early child care center to citizen scientists who collect water quality data in remote locations, nonprofit volunteers have come back after the pandemic. A new survey released this month by the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps shows 28.3 percent or 75.8 million people in the U.S. volunteered with a nonprofit between Sept. 2022 and Sept. 2023. That is a rebound since COVID-19 public health shutdowns tanked participation by almost 7 percentage points to 23.2 percent in 2021, the last time the survey was conducted. It is not a full return to pre-pandemic rates of volunteerism.

Will legislators, Lombardo bring back $250M for teacher raises next year?

Whether or not Nevada teachers will have their recent pay raises continued will come down to a budget decision next year between Nevada lawmakers and Gov. Joe Lombardo. Funding for those raises was created through SB231, a 2023 bill that created a $250 million matching fund for teacher raises that would supplement salary hikes agreed upon during contract negotiations. Fifteen of the state’s 17 school districts have taken advantage of the fund to boost educator salaries, all except Mineral and Pershing counties.

Four weeks after his son, Denali, 16, died by suicide in 2018, Jason Mayne went back to work. Given a month to grieve, Jason thought he could return to his job as a health and safety trainer for Nevada Gold Mines in Elko County, as usual. But after he responded to a fatality at his workplace, the nightmares and panic attacks began and would not let up. Jason realized he needed help processing his son’s suicide. “It was blatantly obvious to everybody else. I couldn’t deny it,” he said.

Suggested minimum donation is $4 for seniors age 60 and older. Visitors must be 16 years or older. Their meal is $10. Hot soup at croutons served daily with meal. Low-fat milk available daily. Safety of food after it has been served & taken from the center is the responsibility of the consumer.
