Attorneys general from 18 states sued Tuesday to block President Donald Trump’s move to end a decades-old immigration policy known as birthright citizenship guaranteeing that U.S.-born children are citizens regardless of their parents’ status. Trump’s roughly 700-word executive order, issued late Monday, amounts to a fulfillment of something he’s talked about during the presidential campaign. But whether it succeeds is far from certain amid what is likely to be a lengthy legal battle over the president’s immigration policies. The executive order could have major implications in Nevada, which has the largest per capita undocumented population of any state and the largest share of mixed-status families in the nation.
Gov. Joe Lombardo’s recommended two-year budget is $335 million in the red without offsetting revenue, state officials confirmed Tuesday, setting up a process that Democrats say will require corrective action from the governor by next week. State officials acknowledged the shortfall and said they have already made revisions to the proposed budget. But an $85 million deficit remains with those changes included, according to testimony given Tuesday by staff of the Governor’s Finance Office during the first pre-session legislative budget meeting of the year.

On Oct. 6, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at the residence of Will DeLong on Jackson Creek Ranch Road in Humboldt County, Nevada. During the investigation that followed, it was determined the property owner, Will DeLong, had been shot in the abdomen by the suspect, identified as Ravyn Fairchild, who had stolen a handgun from a vehicle on the DeLong property and then fired on Will when he was discovered burglarizing the vehicles.

A bipartisan effort to give mining companies more legal rights to federal lands and speed up the permitting process did not make it past a contentious five-week lame duck session, dashing hopes to reverse a major court ruling adopting a stricter interpretation of federal mining law, at least for the time being. In the final weeks of the 118th Congress, before the 119th was sworn in early this month, the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024— a mining reform package shepherded by former independent U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin— fell apart despite a strong bipartisan desire to implement permitting reform.

The Pershing County High School girls basketball team added three league wins to their record last week. Along the way, five of the Mustangs’ players scored in the double digits. "All three wins were true team wins as all the girls contributed. The girls did a great job putting to work everything we worked on in practice," Coach Lee Houston said.
Ask any wrestler. There's nothing like winning a championship match against an opponent who beat you earlier in the season. That's what Israel Knight and Jake Trowbridge achieved at the Steve Deaton Memorial Tournament at Douglas High School in Minden last weekend. Knight pinned wrestlers from Truckee, Lowry Blue and Wooster before winning the 150-pound championship match by a 12-5 decision over Kolton Zinn from Douglas.
There is still a lot of work to do but the right pieces are falling into place for the Lowry High School wrestling team. The Buckaroos placed five wrestlers in the finals at the Steve Deaton Memorial at Douglas High School, with three champions in Pete Bengochea (106), Carlos Gomez (113) and Jhett Harber (175).
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team maintained its lead in the 1A East with a pair of road wins this past weekend. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Jackpot 73-0 on Friday night and faced a much better opponent on Saturday, edging out a 52-28 win over Wells on Saturday afternoon.
The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team stayed in line in a crowded top five in the Northern 2A, with a pair of wins on its home floor this past weekend. The Longhorns had little trouble with Fallon’s Oasis Academy, winning 75-38 on Friday night and Battle Mountain extended its win streak to four, with a 52-37 victory over Yerington on Saturday.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team remained in a spot for a high seed at next month’s regional tournament, despite seeing its five-game winning streak come to an end this past Saturday. The Lady Longhorns completed the first half of the Northern 2A schedule with a 46-27 win over Fallon’s Oasis Academy on Friday night but lost in league play for the first time since Dec. 20, with a 50-34 loss to Yerington.
