A sense of post-Covid normalcy is returning to the Pershing County 11th Judicial. Masks are rarer. Adriana Ramos and Carol Elerick no longer take temperatures before people enter Judge Jim Shirley’s courtroom. Families once again show up to support their loved ones. Everyone hopes it lasts.
On Monday, Jun. 7, Pershing County’s 11th Judicial Court arraigned Jose Javier Figueroa, 22, for open murder and the unlawful use of a firearm. Judge Jim Shirley presided. Las Vegas attorney Bret Whipple represented the defendant. Figueroa pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. On Nov. 3, 2020, officers responded to 1150 Main Street and found a man dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. The City of Lovelock Police Department identified him as Joshua McDonald, 39. Officers arrested Figueroa as a suspect on Nov. 4, 2020.

People in Lovelock know Dylan Garretson, 24, as a soft-spoken and bright young man. Last year, he pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled substance, heroin. Word on the street is that heroin use is on the rise as evidenced by an increase in overdoses. Judge Jim Shirley granted Garretson probation on the condition that he complete drug court, a course of court-supervised treatment. Pershing County’s Western Regional Drug Court accepted Garretson’s application in April 2020. If he completed the program, he could withdraw his guilty plea and avoid having a felony on his record. The future looked slightly more hopeful.
