Camas, Tobey bring home 1A North regional championships for Bulldogs


There has been one constant for the McDermitt High School track and field team — its group of throwers in the discus and shot put.

That was on full display once again this past weekend at the Northern 1A Regional Championships at Douglas High School in Minden.

The Bulldogs swept the top spot in the discus.

Senior Lailoni Tobey won the girls event with a throw of 105 feet, 6 inches, with teammate Kiarra Crutcher second with a toss of 85-5. Both will compete at Moapa Valley High School at the state championships.

Cierra Smart (75-2) and freshman Cree Camas (70-1) were seventh and ninth, respectfully, in the discus.

Tobey qualified for the state championships in the shot put as well, placing third with a throw of 29-4.25. Crutcher was fifth at 28-4.25, with Smart (27-8) and Camas (25-11) sixth and eighth.

The Bulldogs were eighth in the final team standings with 24 points.

Eureka eeked out the team title, defeating Smith Valley (126-124).

On the boys side Shandon Camas claimed the gold in the discus with a throw of 131-10 to go with a runner-up finish in the shot put with a mark of 45-00.75.

It is his second consecutive regional title.

Teammate AJ Farmer will join him in Overton, finishing third in the shot put with a throw of 39-3.25. Farmer, a junior, placed eighth in the discus (102-7). 

Freshman Trevor Smart ended the weekend with a ninth-place finish in the shot put and 13th in the discus.

Sophomore Chris Scott was one place out of qualifying for state in the long jump, finishing fifth with a leap of 17 feet, 4 inches. He placed sixth in the triple jump (36-10. 

Scott also competed in the 100-meter dash (13.52) and 200 meters (27.22) and finished 13th and 15th, respectfully.

McDermitt finished ninth in the team standings with 32 points.

Mineral County (Hawthorne) won the regional team title with 129 points, followed by Smith Valley (107).

Eureka (96), Wells (86) and Sage (Ridge (55) rounded out the top five. 

The NIAA State Championships take place Friday and Saturday at Moapa Valley High School.
