The Battle Mountain High School track and field team will be well represented at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships after strong performances this past weekend at the regional championships this past weekend at Douglas High School in Minden.
Sophomore Moroni Colver brought home the gold in the triple jump with a mark of 38 feet, 11 inches, with teammate Abraham Nevarez joining him in Overton.
The freshman placed fourth with a leap of 37-0. In addition, Nevarez placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 16-9.50.
Longhorn junior Andres Molina qualified for state in both throwing events. He turned in third-place finishes in the discus on a throw of 121-8 and the shot put at 44-7.50.
Joey Smith and Aden Jenkins punches spots to Moapa Valley High School in the pole vault, with Smith second, clearing 10-9 and Jenkins, a sophomore at 10-6.
The duo will also race in the 110-meter hurdles at state, as Smith was the runner-up in a time of 18.37 seconds, with Jenkins improving from fifth in the preliminaries to the fourth and final transfer spot at 19.73.
Three of the four of relays qualified for the state, with the foursome of Chase Lutz, Elias Goodman, Colver and Geovanni Ruvalcaba placing third in the 4x100 relay in a time of 45.18.
The same four runners but in a different order on the track were fourth in a time of 1:35.70.
The final group to qualify was the 4x800 relay of Zayne Hall, Sean Doney, Finn Bundrock and Colver, who placed fourth and stopped the watch at 9:54.67.
Battle Mountain was near the top of the team standings after day one and finished fourth with 100 points.
Coral Academy of Science from Reno won with 148 points, followed by North Tahoe (137) and Incline (118).
Bleak advances to state championships in two events
Battle Mountain senior Lindsey Bleak made her final regional championships special, qualifying for the state meet in two events.
She was the runner-up and took home the silver in the pole vault, clearing the bat at 6 feet, 6 inches. She placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 29-2.50.
Danielle Madalena qualified for state with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 meters in a time of 13:43.72.
The Battle Mountain girls will also send three relays to southern Nevada this weekend.
The 4x100 relay of Hailee Cook, Yaritza Vazquez, Bleak and Kendall Mudd placed second in a time of 53.37.
The 4x400 relay of Mudd, Vazquez, Violet Peterson and Cook finished fourth in a time of 5:09.76.
Madalena, Alivia Liebhardt, Peterson and Sonja Shere placed fourth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 13:09.40.
The Battle Mountain girls finished fifth in the team standings with 53 points. Coral Academy ran away with the team title with 189 points, with Incline second at 147.
The NIAA State Championships take place Friday and Saturday at Moapa Valley High School.
