Pershing County's Desaray Vidrio inches toward home plate during a game earlier in the season in Lovelock.
The Pershing County High School softball team made its longest road trip of the year this past weekend, heading to the Utah/Nevada border.
The Mustangs challenged the West Wendover Wolverines and added three high-scoring wins to their record (28-7, 22-4, 19-2).
Pershing County now stand at 6-3 overall and 6-0 in the Northern 2A.
The Mustangs have depth on their side with five sophomores, six juniors, a senior and a couple of freshmen.
They’re all pulling together and perfecting their roles.
Jerzie Jones handled the pitching for the weekend.
“Her speed and precision on the mound were outstanding. She gets better every day, and what’s exciting is she is only a sophomore,” Coach Jordan McKinney said.
Alexa Watson, Lauren Poffenroth and Anika Happy have reason to be confident about their hitting.
“They are blossoming into excellent players,” McKinney added.
The Mustangs plan their strategy.
Happy and Poffenroth are juniors while Watson is a sophomore.
Desaray Vidrio’s performance as an outfielder led the coach to remark that the freshman has “a cannon for an arm.”
Meanwhile, sophomore Katelyn Elerick played third base, a crucial infield position known as the "hot corner.”
Catcher Aaliyah Allen only let three balls get by her all weekend.
“That’s incredible. Her blocking this season has been excellent and I am looking forward to seeing how much better she gets,” McKinney said.
As the team’s only senior, this is Allen’s last season of high school sports.
“Our girls for the most part were patient and disciplined at the plate this weekend and made some really good base running decisions,” McKinney said.
The team traveled to Incline Village to play the Highlanders last Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.
This Saturday, Pershing County hosts the Highlanders for the last two games of the series at 10 a.m. and noon.
The Highlanders are 3-3 in the 2A Northern, having just swept Silver Stage 3-0 in a tripleheader.
