The Pershing County High School baseball had a rough weekend on the road against West Wendover. The Mustangs lost all three games of the triple-header to the Wolverines (9-1, 15-5, and 9-8 in eight innings) but the scores tell only part of the story.
This was most evident in the last game of the series which the Mustangs lost by one run in extra innings.
“The first two games of the series were tough coming off a long bus ride and being ready to play, but the boys showed up for the last game,” Coach Jared Jensen said.
The Mustangs had 11 hits and stepped up their defense. Wyatt Hughes and Trenton Rhodes handled the pitching and turned in solid performances according to the coach.
“We were in a position to steal the game from West Wendover but came up short in extra innings. Hopefully, we can carry that kind of performance into future games as we can win a lot of games playing the way we did that day,” he said.
Ayden Montes and Logan Hunt each hit over .400 for the weekend. Rhodes turned in two triples. Tyler Miller stood out on first base.
The Mustangs stand at 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the Northern 2A.
“We saw improvement in our team this week,” Jensen said.
The Mustangs traveled to Incline Village to play the Highlanders on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. This Saturday the boys will host Incline at 10 a.m. and noon.
Incline comes into the fray at 2-4, overall and 2-4 in the Northern 2A.
