McDermitt track and field team begins season in Dayton, Yerington


The McDermitt High School track and field team has its first two meets of the season under its belt with strong performances from its athletes.

On Friday, March 7, the squad traveled to Dayton for the Dust Devil Invite.

Junior Shandon Camas posted a personal best in the shot put to win the event with a throw of 45 feet, 4.5 inches. 

He placed third in the discus with a toss of 129-8.

AJ Farmer posted a seventh-place finish in the shot put (34-10) and 10th in the discus (94-0) and freshman Trevor Smart placed 11th in the shot put (32-11.5) and 14th in the discus.

 Smart was 33rd in the long jump with a mark of 11-7.

Sophomore Chriss Scott finished 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 33-6.5, 12th in the long jump (16-4) and 14th in the high jump, clearing the bar at a personal-best 4-8.

Warrick Crutcher set a personal best in the 800 meters to place 13th in a time of 2:48.20 and was 32nd in the long jump.

Lailoni Tobey swept the top spots in throwing events on the girls side, She tossed the discus 82-10 and the shot put 29-1.50. 

Freshman Cree Camas placed fourth in the shot put (26-11.5) in her first high school meet. She was 11th in the discus (56-4).

Fellow freshman Niyla Willow finished 12th in the 800 meters (3:20.57) and 14th in the 400 meters (1:17.50).


Yerington Lions Invitational

This past Friday, McDermitt beat the bad weather and competed at the Yerington Lions Invitational.

Shandon Camas took home the top spot in the shot put, with a throw of 43-9 and the junior set a personal best in the discus at 129-11 to place second.

Farmer collected a top-10 finish in the shot put, with a throw of 25-5.0 to place eighth and he was 24th in the discus (79-7).

Chris Scott placed 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 32.-11.25 and Trevor Smart finished 15th in the shot put (33-1.50) and 16th in the discus (87-11).

On the girls side, Kiarra Crutcher was the runner-up in the shot put with as throw of 28-10, while teammate Tobey was third (28-3). 

The roles were reversed in the discus, as Tobey placed third with a throw of 88-2 and Crutcher was fifth (80-9).

Cierra Smart placed eight in the shot put (26-10) and 11th in the discus (74-2) and Cree Camas was 21st in the shot put (23-3) and 22nd in the discus (63-2). 

Willow placed 14th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:21.50.

McDermitt travels to Spring Creek on Friday for the Ward Coates Invitational.
