After going through a dry and mild November, December and January, you knew spring sports was going to take the brunt of the winter weather with an early start in late February and now into March.
The Lowry High School softball team saw its doubleheader with South Tahoe scheduled this past Saturday at Lampe Park in Gardnerville postponed until March 25 back at Lampe Park.
On Saturday, March 8, Lowry was scheduled to host North Valleys in its home debut, only to have Mother Nature waive her finger and day no.
The games were moved to Reno and North Valleys High School, where the Lady Bucks swept the Panthers 15-0 and 3-2 to improve to 6-2 on the season.
In the opener of the doubleheader, freshman Makinley Hislop continued her red start, striking out five and walking two in the three-inning victory. He allowed just one hit.
Dana Micone, a transfer from Dayton High School, was 3-for-3, with three RBI and two runs scored in her season debut. The senior catcher/shortstop missed the opening tournament due to prior school commitments.
Natalya Guizar was 3-for-3 with three RBI as well, including two triples.
Senior Liliana Aguilar contributed three hits as well, scoring two runs and driving in a pair.
Adalyn Entwistle and Maite Bengochea each added two hits and Hislop helped herself with a hit, RBI and run scored.
In the nightcap, Lowry scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to build a 3-0 advantage and held on from there.
The other half of the Lowry freshman pitching duo, saw Bengochea scatter nine hits through seven innings and struck out five and walked three to earn the win.
Hislop and Bengochea each had two hits, with Kira Wiley, Guizar and Micone each having one hit.
Lowry will see its toughest stretch of games to this point of the year with four games in Boise, Idaho, this weekend.
Lowry is scheduled to play Homedale, Idaho and La Grande, Ore., on Friday at 10 a.m. and noon, respectfully.
The Lady Bucks are scheduled to play Vallivue, Idaho and Kuna, Idaho, on Saturday.
The doubleheader with South Tahoe is set for March 25 and the Northern 3A East start March 28-29 in Fernley.
Fernley ended Lowry’s hopes of a return trip to the state tournament last year at the regional championships in extra innings, scoring the winning run on a controversial call at home plate.
