Lowry freshman Makinley Hislop tossed a perfect game against Elko in a 1-0 win at the Colorado River Invitational in Needles, Calif.

It was long days and seemingly later nights but the Lowry High School softball team accomplished what it needed to during the Colorado River Invitational in Needles, Calif.

The Lady Bucks left last Wednesday for southern California and didn’t finish play until late Saturday afternoon, reaching the bracketed semifinals before getting eliminated.

Lowry, with some new faces in the lineup, along with some veterans, went 4-2 in six games.

One of those new faces, freshman Makinley Hislop threw a perfect game against Elko.

Lowry 11, Boulder City 0

In Lowry’s first game of the tournament on Thursday afternoon, the Lady Bucks made quick work of Southern 3A foe Boulder City.

Lowry got all the runs it would need, as Hislop doubled home fellow freshman Maite Avalos for a 1-0 advantage.

The Lady Bucks took advantage of a walk and error from the Eagles to add four more runs, including a triple by Liliana Aguilar that plated Elisabeth George and Kira Wiley. Bengochea also had an RBI single in the frame.

In the six-run sixth inning, Natalya Guizar added a two-RBI triple and Fallon Fowler contributed with a two-RBI double.

Six different players had at least one hit, with Aguilar going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Bengochea, Fowler and Guizar each had two RBI.

In her first official high school game, Bengochea struck out seven      and allowed three hits for the win in the circle. She threw just 57 pitches — 45 strikes.

The Lowry High School softball team finished the weekend 4-2 at the Colorado River Invitational in Needles, Calif.

Lowry 8, SECTA 1

Lowry’s second game on Thursday started late and finished around 8:30 p.m. The Roadrunners scored its lone run in the first inning, when Hislop shut them down after that.

She allowed one run on one hit and struck out seven in four innings.

Lowry broke the contest open with six runs in the second inning, with the assistance off a two-RBI single by Bengochea and a two-RBI double by Crisslyn Rodriguez.

Rodriguez led the Lady Bucks with two hits and two RBI.

Tolleson 4, Lowry 2

In the final contest of pool play on Friday morning, Lowry used a triple from Guizar and a sacrifice from Fowler to lead 2-0 after two innings of play.

The Wolverines, who eventually won the tournament, cut the deficit in half with a single run in the third inning and won the game in the fourth, taking advantage of two hits to start the frame and a couple defensive miscues.

Hislop had two of the six hits for Lowry but suffered the loss in the circle. She allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits. The freshman struck out four and walked one.

Tolleson is a 6A school from Arizona that went 23-9 last year. The Wolverines defeated the Lady Bucks 15-1 in the tournament last year.

Lowry 7, Spring Creek 2

When the same teams from northern Nevada go to the same tournament as you do, there will be a chance to you might play them. So, as Lowry and Spring Creek traveled about 600 miles and 10 hours, they played in the first round of bracket play.

Lowry dominated its rival, scoring three runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth to win 7-2.

Bengochea was dominant in the circle, as she allowed one hit through five innings, with 11 strikeouts and two walks. George saw some time in the circle, throwing the final inning.

Lowry 1, Elko 0

If one local rival wasn’t enough, Lowry played a second rival in the next round of bracket play.

This game belonged to Hislop, who threw a perfect game. She struck out nine batters and needed just 72 pitches in six innings of work.

The only run of the game came in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Bengochea to score Fowler.

Elko’s Taylor Hunton was dominant in the circle as well, allowing just three hits — one each to Bengochea, Rodriguez and Fowler.

Doral Academy Red Rock 9, Lowry 2

Lowry’s run in the tournament came to an end Saturday afternoon, with a 9-2 loss to Doral Academy Red Rock from Las Vegas. The Dragons play in the Southern 4A. Doral was one of the final eight left in last year’s state tournament.

Weather permitting, Lowry hosts North Valleys on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. This will be the final year of the 3A for North Valleys, who moves back to the large division next year.
