The Lowry High School track and field team opened the 2025 season at the Rustbuster Invitational in Patterson, Calif.
With the spring sports season starting earlier and earlier on the calendar, one never knows what to expect weather wise.
In the past, the Lowry High School track and field team did its best to avoid rain or snow in beautiful northern Nevada in early March.
The Buckaroos changed that all up and headed to Patterson, Calif., this past Saturday to open its season with the 6th annual Tiger Rustbuster Invitational.
The Lowry girls won the team title with 141 points and the Buckaroo boys were second with 87 points. Modesto won the team title with 119 points
Lowry junior Brent Kenison picked up from where he left off last May after winning multiple state championships.
Kenison took home the top spot in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 2 inches.
Teammates Shane Gilliland (5-4) and JP Lisboa (5-2) were second and third, respectfully.
Kenison set a personal best in the triple jump to win with a leap of 46 feet, 8 inches and Kenison cleared the pole vault bar at 11 feet, 6 inches to win that event. Gilliland was second at 10-6.
In addition, Kenison placed third in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 19.07 seconds. The event is a new one for him this year.
Ryder Huitt, a junior, won the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 17.34 seconds and fellow junior Jonathan Moser finished as the runner-up in the discus with a toss of 118-7. Moser was 14th in the shot put at 34-0.50.
Freshman Nathanael Gordon finished seventh in the 200 meters in the fresh/soph. division and eighth in the 100-meter dash. Cooper Hoagland (11:38.92), Anden Thomas (12:00.85) and Kolby Hoagland (13:00.85) placed fourth, fifth and ninth, respectfully, in the 3,200 meters. Cooper Hogland added a fifth-place outing in the 1,600 meters.

Lowry girls pace the field in California
On the girls side, junior Kylee Wilkinson swept the top spot in the shot put and discus. Wilkinson had a throw od 26-2 in the shot and 101-8 in the discus. Teammate, Kailani Rodriguez finished second in the shot put (25-10.50) and third in the discus (82-6).
Kianna Bazile, a junior, got into the winning ways leading the triple jump with a leap of 33-1.5.
Bazile placed second in the high jump at 4-10, followed by teammates Amaya Betes (4-8) and Vanessa Lott (4-8) in third and fourth place. In addition, Bazile placed third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 55.22.
The 4x100 relay of Tariana Weatherspoon, Katlin Messmer, Kepa Hilbish and Britain Backus won with a time of 52.50.
Sophomore Alyla Thomas came back from California with runner-up finishes in the 1,600 meters (5:44.35) and the 3,200 meters (13:15.34), with freshman Preciado fourth in the 3,200 meters (13:55.0) and seventh in the 1,600 meters (6:24.50).
Sophomore Ava Swensen finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:37.07), third in the 1,600 meters )5:52.98) and fourth in the 400 meters (1:04.10).
Backus placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with as time of 13.56, followed by Weatherspoon in sixth (13.82). Hilbish finished sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 28.83.
Messmer placed second in the 200 meters in the fresh/soph. division with a time of 28.46 and was second in the 100 meters at 13.56.
Lowry will head down to Las Vegas on Saturday for another new meet, competing at the Bishop Gorman-NTS Invitational.
