CARSON CITY — The Nevada departments of transportation and motor vehicles remind residents not to respond to a continuing driving fee scam.
Various versions of the scam have been seen across the nation this year.
On June 9, the Nevada Department of Transportation received hundreds of calls from citizens who recently received a slightly updated scam text.
The most recent text scam falsely claims to be from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and states that the recipient has an outstanding traffic ticket. Recipients are asked to click through to a website to immediately pay and avoid license and other suspensions. The message also references toll booth service fees.
Nevada does not have tolls on public roads, meaning that any claims of toll road fees in the state of Nevada are illegitimate. Some other indicators within the scam messages include a reference to State Administrative Code 15C-16.003, which does not exist.
NDOT does not issue traffic or parking citations. The Nevada DMV will also never contact you about penalties via text message. They will only contact you via mail or email.
• Recipients receiving scam messages about outstanding traffic tickets or toll balances should not provide any payment or personal information.
• If you receive a text, do not click on the link and delete the message. Using your phone’s “report junk” feature is an additional option.
