Dogs not allowed at Highland Park

The Winnemucca Police Department has announced it will begin enforcing a municipal code that prohibits dogs at Highland Park, citing increased health and safety concerns for children who use the facility for sports.

According to a recent news release, Winnemucca Municipal Code 6.08.220 has long prohibited dogs in Highland Park. However, city officials acknowledged that the rule had not been actively enforced in recent years. That’s about to change.

"Highland Park plays a critical role in hosting youth sports, particularly football practices and games,” the release stated. “Unfortunately, ongoing issues—including some dog owners not cleaning up after their pets and allowing damage to the fields—have made enforcement necessary."

Pet waste poses a public health risk, particularly for children, whose developing immune systems make them more vulnerable to bacteria and parasites found in dog feces. In addition to the risk of illness, damage to the turf from dog activity compromises the quality and safety of the playing fields.

Effective immediately, Animal Control and Winnemucca Police officers will approach dog owners found at Highland Park and ask them to remove their pets. Repeat violations could potentially result in citations, though the release emphasized voluntary compliance and education as the city’s initial approach.

To accommodate pet owners, the City of Winnemucca has designated Riverside Park as a dog-friendly alternative and is actively exploring additional pet-friendly recreation spaces.

City officials are asking for the public’s cooperation as they work to preserve Highland Park as a clean and safe environment for youth athletics.
