Pershing sophomore Magdalena Ramirez celebrates pinning the Spanish Springs wrestler who defeated her at the regionals last year.
It's not every day that a high school sports team makes school history. Last week the Pershing County High School wrestling team did it twice in a matter of hours.
At the NIAA All Girls Northern Regional at McQueen High School in Reno on Jan.24-25, Magdalena Ramirez became the first-ever Pershing County girl to qualify to compete at the state level.
The sophomore trailblazer finished third place in the 140-pound weight class in all of northern Nevada.
Ramirez received a bye in the first round. Reed wrestler Esmeralda Garcia Alvarez pinned her in the second round.
In the consolation rounds, Ramirez pinned a South Tahoe wrestler, a White Pine wrestler and the Spanish Springs wrestler who defeated her at the regionals last year.
Pershing County coach Tim Brooks hugs Magdalena Ramirez as she advanced to the state tournament.
She won the third-place match against Garcia Alvarez by fall.
"I couldn't make it because of the semi wreck on the interstate," Brooks added. "My brother took the school van off road to get her there. She weighed in late, pinned two girls she was 0-4 in her career against them. That's Mustang lore right there, She is awesome. Hopefully we can keep it rolling this week,"
Meanwhile, the history-making continued in Lovelock and Battle Mountain as Pershing County took home the top spot in the Northern 2A League duals for the first time since 2019.
James George duals with a Silver Stage wrestler in Pershing County last Wednesday.
"We've been second place many times. Small victory and plenty of work ahead," coach Mike Brooks said.
At the duals, Pershing County defeated Coral Academy 72-12, Silver Stage 78-0, Yerington 66-12, Wells 72-11, Eureka 53-20, Owyhee 78-0, Incline by forfeit and Battle Mountain 47-30.
