Ask any wrestler. There's nothing like winning a championship match against an opponent who beat you earlier in the season.
That's what Israel Knight and Jake Trowbridge achieved at the Steve Deaton Memorial Tournament at Douglas High School in Minden last weekend.
Knight pinned wrestlers from Truckee, Lowry Blue and Wooster before winning the 150-pound championship match by a 12-5 decision over Kolton Zinn from Douglas.
Trowbridge pinned a McQueen wrestler and two North Valley wrestlers before winning the 190-pound title versus Emiliano DeLaTorre of Sparks by a 17-8 major decision.
James George (120B) and Magdalena Ramirez (140) also brought home the gold. George won all four of his matches by pin. He pinned wrestlers from Truckee, Churchill County, Silver Stage and Douglas.
Coach Mike Brooks says Ramirez had her best meet of the season so far.
In the girls tournament, Ramirez pinned wrestlers from Spanish Springs, Reed and South Tahoe in the first three rounds and won her fourth match against Yerington by medical forfeit.
Justin Carruth, Wyatt Hughes, Cade Liebsack and Jaxson Happy also had strong tournaments according to their coaches.
Pershing County finished fifth out of 27 with 105 points, behind Lowry (183), McQueen (170) and Douglas (115).
Meanwhile, five wrestlers attended the Carson High JV meet — Anthony Gibson, Ayden Anderson, Houston Allen, Landen Burt and Aiden Talley.
Gibson (175) won a gold medal and Allen (215) earned his first high school medal by placing third in his weight class.
Ayden Anderson (106) also brought home a bronze medal. Landen Burt (120) came in fourth.
This weekend the team travels to the Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational.
"Overall, we wrestled well and the kids continue to improve, a testament to their hard work and dedication. They have been a lot of fun to coach. We are very proud of them," Brooks said.
