Lady Longhorns split with Bighorns, Lions

The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team remained in a spot for a high seed at next month’s regional tournament, despite seeing its five-game winning streak come to an end this past Saturday.

The Lady Longhorns completed the first half of the Northern 2A schedule with a 46-27 win over Fallon’s Oasis Academy on Friday night but lost in league play for the first time since Dec. 20, with a 50-34 loss to Yerington.

Battle Mountain remains in second place in the Northern 2A at 7-12 and 12-3 overall, with Yerington third at 6-2. North Tahoe is undefeated in league play.

The difference in the contest on Friday night was the first and third quarters, where the Lady Longhorns outscored the Bighorns 33-10.

Battle Mountain grabbed a 11-point lead after eight minutes of play and held that same 11-point advantage into halftime at 24-13.

The Lady Longhorns put the contest out of reach with an 1806 run in the third quarter.

Noel Hill, one of only two upperclassmen on the roster, nailed five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 19 points. The junior also contributed two rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.

Sophomore Hevan Martinez added six points, six rebounds and two steals and fellow sophomore Paitynn Johns had six points to go with 10 rebounds.

Freshman Yadira Vazquez came down with eight rebounds and scored four points and Harlee Anderson, Lindsey Bleak and Kamila Farias each scored three points.

Yerington 50, BMHS 34

Battle Mountain got off to a promising start on Saturday afternoon, as Hill scored seven of Battle Mountain’s 11 points in the first quarter to provide an 11-8 advantage.

However, it was all Yerington to end the opening half, outscoring Battle Mountain 19-2 to lead 27-13 at halftime. 

The Lady Longhorns went without a field goal, with the lone two points coming from Farias with 1:46 left to go in the second quarter.

Hill ended the field goal drought for Battle Mountain with a 3-pointer 90 seconds into the third quarter to cut the deficit to 10 points at 27-17, when the Lions went on a 7-0 run to lead 34-17 and never saw the lead drop below 10 points from there.

Hill dropped four more 3-pointers for 18 points, with Johns and Farias adding four points apiece. Ella Matheus, Bleak, Martinez and Vazquez each had two points.

Battle Mountain’s six-game homestand ends this weekend, as the Lady Longhorns host Pershing County on Friday at 6 p.m. and Coral Academy on Saturday at 2 p.m.
