There is still a lot of work to do but the right pieces are falling into place for the Lowry High School wrestling team.
The Buckaroos placed five wrestlers in the finals at the Steve Deaton Memorial at Douglas High School, with three champions in Pete Bengochea (106), Carlos Gomez (113) and Jhett Harber (175).
Odyn Santos was the runner-up in the 138-pound weight class, as was Randy Patterson at 165.
Lowry held of McQueen for the team title (183-170), as many believe the Lancers are the second-best team to Spanish Springs in the Northern 5A. Douglas was third with 115 points, followed by Churchill County (113.5) and Pershing County (105).
Lowry's Kruz Gomez takes down Fernley's Caleb Finley at last week's dual.
“It was good to win something after being in those tough tournaments,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “You get beat up in those big tournaments. “We haven’t done anything yet. We still got a lot of work to do.”
Bengochea did not have a match go past the 3:30 mark on the day, dominating the four matches he wrestled.
He had to wrestle teammate Edward Jones in the semifinals and won that match and pinned North Valleys’ Uriah Webber for the title.
Gomez saw action in just three matches and won all three in under 90 seconds. He pinned Truckee’s Luca Barlow and North Valleys’ Nathanyruren Barrios to reach the final, where he pinned Reed’s Tyler Thomas at 1:29 of the first period.
Harber, who was coming off an individual title at the Rollie Lane Invitational, breezed through his four matches.
He was on the mat for less than 58 seconds in the first two bours. The senior needed just 76 to pin McQueen’s Gino Uccelli.
Santos won his first three matches by pin at 138 pounds but ran into Churchill County’s Lonnie Adamas, who beat him for the title.
At 165 pounds, Patterson reached the final with two pins and a 13-0 decision but lost to South Tahoe’s Kash Henricks in the final. Erick Valencia was third at 165 pounds defeating Reno’s Jackson Hutchins 17-0.
Lowry's Giovanni Monroy pins Fernley's Wyatt McGinnis at 157 pounds.
Giovanni Monroy earned himself a third-place finish at 157 pounds, pinning South Tahoe’s Conner Hennessee.
Kruz Gomez (126) and Teyo Gomez (144) each placed fourth.
Lowry beats Fernley, Battle Mountain in duals
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Lowry honored the three seniors in Jhett Harber, Jake Bauman and Logan Jonas, as the Buckaroos dualled Fernley and Battle Mountain.
Monroy had a big win at 157 pounds to turn the momentum and Harber, JJ Villagomez and Bengochea added wins to give Lowry a 46-33 win.
Lowry won 12 of the 14 matches against Battle Mountain to beat the Longhorns 72-12.
Lowry travels to Spring Creek this weekend for the Kiwanis Invitational.
