Lowry knocked off by Elko in league opener


After having its original league opener postponed on Friday, the Lowry High School boys basketball team opened Northern 3A East play on Saturday afternoon in Elko. The Indians pulled away in the second half for a 60-39 win. 

The Buckaroos took an early 15-13 lead after eight minutes of play, with all the points coming off 3-pointers.

The Indians scored the first four points of the day but shots by Matthew Casalez and Byron Jimenez tied the game at 6-6. 

Elko grabbed another four-point lead at 10-6, when Txema Bengochea knocked down a 3-pointer for Lowry with 2:57 left in the quarter. 

On the next Buckaroo possession, Jaden Jimenez connected on a 20-foot 3 pointer to give Lowry its first lead at 12-10. Jaden Jimenez made his second 3-pointer of the quarter, following a save out of bounds to give the Buckaroos the 15-13 lead.

The hot shooting continued at the start of the second quarter with a second 3-pointer from Byron Jimenez but Lowry scored just two points in the final six minutes plus of the first half. 

Elko went into halftime with a 24-20 advantage. Lowry went scoreless for the final 4:36, as Jaden Jimenez scored the only 2-point basket of the half.

The scoreless streak ended quickly, as Bengochea made a 3-pointer on the first possession of the third quarter. From there, the Indians went on an 8-0 run to go in front 32-23, when a layup by Jaden Jimenez stopped the run.

Elko extended is lead to 49-30 three minutes into the fourth quarter and the deficit. 

Lowry got within 12 points at 49-37, when Elko closed out the game on a 11-2 run. 

Jaden Jimenez paced Lowry with 17 points, Byron Jimenez added 11, Bengochea six, Casalez three and Conner Nelson two.

Lowry traveled to Spring Creek on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Buckaroos travel to Fallon on Friday to play Churchill County at 7:30 p.m.
