Lady Longhorns improve to 6-1

After having 11 days off over Christmas break, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team jumped back into the fire with three games in consecutive days last week.

The Lady Longhorns improved to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in league play after picking up a 38-37 overtime win on the road at West Wendover on Thursday, a 63-18 victory over Silver Stage and a 36-12 win over Sierra Lutheran at home on Saturday.


BMHS 38, 

West Wendover 37 OT

Battle Mountain came out in the first quarter a little rusty after the long break, as West Wendover scored the first 11 points of the contest. 

The Lady Longhorns finally got on the board and trailed 14-5 after eight minutes of play.

The two squads combined for just a point in the first six minutes of the second quarter, with that coming from Battle Mountain. West Wendover went into the break, leading 18-7.

The Lady Longhorns trailed by seven points (25-18) at the start of the fourth quarter but scored the first eight points to go in front for the first time at 26-25 with 5:22 to play.

Junior Noel Hill, who finished with a game-high 21 points banked in a shot to tie the game at 30 with 29 seconds to play and had a chance to win the game with 3.9 seconds to play but missed two free throws.

In overtime, sophomore Kamila Farias knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the Wolverine lead to 34-33 and Hill nailed a 3-pointer to stay within a basket at 37-35.

After making a free throw, Hill hit a long 2-point shot with 9.5 seconds to go for the eventual winning basket. 

Hill added six rebounds, four steals and an assist to go with her 21 points.

Paitynn Johns added seven points, 17 rebounds, four assists and two steals and Farias contributed five points, five rebounds and two steals and Lindsey Bleak and Hevan Martinez had three and two points, respectfully. 

Martinez also grabbed eight rebounds.

BMHS 63, 

Silver Stage 18

Playing on its home floor for the first time this past Friday, Battle Mountain made quick work of Silver Stage with a 22-3 run in the opening quarter. 

The Lady Longhorns outscored the Nighthawks 26-4 in the second half, with Silver Stage not scoring in the fourth quarter.

The scoring was spread evenly, with Hill leading the way with 15 and Johns and Ella Matheus in double figures as well with 13 and 11, respectfully. 

Hill added nine assists, six steals and six blocks, with Johns finishing with seven rebounds and seven steals.

Bleak netted nine points to go with three rebounds, three assists and three steals and Farias had seven points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Martinez scored six points and Grace Huhta had two points.


BMHS 36, 

Sierra Lutheran 12

Battle Mountain closed out the weekend with an easy win over Sierra Lutheran. The Falcons made just one field goal in the two middle quarters and four for the contest.

Hill knocked down four 3-pointers, as she outscored Sierra Lutheran by herself with 16 points. Johnson added 10 points, Martinez eight and Bleak two.

Battle Mountain is back on its home floor on Friday to play Oasis Academy at 4:30 p.m. and Yerington on Saturday at 2 p.m.
