A “Salute to Service” night coinciding with the Nevada-Air Force basketball game on Jan. 14 will honor all military, first responders and law enforcement agencies at Lawlor Events Center.
The event follows a salute to the military on Nov. 2 when the Wilf Pack hosted Colorado State on Nov. 2.
During halftime, 57 Gold Star flags were paraded on the field with each star representing a family that lost a loved one in war.
A 30-minute ceremony was held, attended by veterans from the Nevada State Veterans Home in Sparks and three Gold Star families from Northern Nevada.
The university said the ceremony during the Nevada-Air Force Mountain West Conference game will be just as meaningful.
“We are doing half-off tickets to all veterans or those that have served in any capacity of the aforementioned groups and are also selecting an individual from each such as Reno Police, Sparks Police, VA Sierra Nevada and so forth to be honored on the court,” said Evan Jameson, an account executive with the University of Nevada.
Jameson said the university is also recognizing service men and women who are nominated by their employment agency or department or by veteran services by having them down on the court.
“We will be giving each nominee two tickets to the game and will have exclusive seating in the lower bowl where the band usually resides,” Jameson said. “Our announcer will host small groups out on the court during media breaks and halftime to present each biographical or service achievements.”
Jameson said the intent is make this night a special moment for each of the nominees and for the community to rally behind those that have served us on the front lines with our military or with our first responders.
