Battle Mountain NNA swim team kicks off new season in Carson City

The Battle Mountain Northern Nevada Aquatics swim team began its new season with a pair of meets. The 2025 Blizzard Blast Swim meet, season-opener, was held Jan. 17-19, at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

Beckett Buffington competed in the boys 9-10-year-old division and placed 10th in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 4 minutes, 10.18 seconds. 

He finished 12th in the 100-yard backstroke (2:06.57), 15th in the 25-yard freestyle (22.21), 16th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:57.45) and 18th in both the 50-yard backstroke (1:01.16) and the 50-yard freestyle (51.92).

Barrett Buffington also competed in the 9-10-year-old division and his best finish was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, where he nearly chopped off six seconds to finish at 2:49.73.

He improved by 2.28 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke to finish fifth in a time of 1:29.40.

He also placed fifth in the 50-yard backstroke at 40.04 and was sixth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:56.93) and the 50-yard freestyle (34.65).

Buffington was seventh in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.26 and eighth in the 100-yard individual medley (1:32.85).

Nevaeh Serna collected three second-place finishes in the 13 and over age group. 

She was the runner-up in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:22, the 25-yard freestyle (12.73) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.65).

She finished third in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:25.09 and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle at 27.23 seconds. 

Serna placed ninth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.50) and 16th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.96).

Serna was the lone Battle Mountain swimmer to compete at the Valentines Day Age Group Open from Feb. 7-9 in Carson City. 

The young swimmer claimed the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:22.06, as well as the 100-yard individual medley, where she took off 2.61 seconds to stop the clock at 1:08.19.

She added second-place finishes in the 400-yard individual medley (5:21.03), 100-yard backstroke (1:04.70 and the 100-yard freestyle (59.64). 

Serna was third in both the 200-yard individual medley (1:28.58) and the 50-yard freestyle (27.95) and was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:16.09).
